The Toon or your Job?

  1. I know people in different situations may have different opinions on this, but what would you rather have.

I've got two job opportunities. Both pretty good NHS jobs.

One of them will be part time, 24 hours a week and basically about 4-5 hours a day. It's not amazing pay but i never spend alot of money and i don't have my own house or anything. All i need to do is pay my parents rent and have some money ready to buy a few things i like and pay the club for my season ticket every year. I don't need big money and i can save well. (I saved over 10 grand on a low payed job)

The second job is full time, great pay, but i will have to work night shift often and perhaps even work on weekends from time to time.

I can't imagine how i'd feel if i missed an epic game like the 4-4 Arsenal game, due to night shift duties or having to stay on for a weekend. If i had missed that game i would have cried.

So which one would you take?

I know if you had kids and a wife ect, the job would be the most important thing if you had to support them, but if you're in my situation, where all you had to support is yourself, and you hold the Toon in your heart, which one would you take?

    I'm not sure :S

Note, yes i know this is one of my few articles ranting about my personal life, but it's to do with the Toon aswell so i'm just trying to get opinions of Toon fans on this situation.

It will always be the toon as number1 for me until I have a family of my own.
    Then everything will change.

  4. Yeah but i'm only 19 and probably far off moving out, and you never know with the NHS and this new government mate, i could end up losing my job due to cuts and any random time. The NHS aren't handing out permenant contracts any more, they give contracts which state they can get rid of you if they can't have you anymore or if they don't need you.

I'd just feel like **** if i had to miss the derby day or a big game due to work :S

Which is more likly to lead to better job prospects?

I'd have thought the permanant one.

I used to be of the opinion at your age that I'd never do nights or weekends, but did.

The experience will do you some good :D

Plus if the contracts don't last very long as you say, it's a good chance to build up more cash in the bank.

I have to work til 3 on saturdays meaning i miss the first couple of minutes of a match sometimes (its a part time job in the toon). I dont like it but I need the money at the end of the day to pay for ****. I'd take the well paid job if your not at uni or anything.

  9. Yeah but that only works if the other person agrees. In the place i'd be going to, everyone had to do night shift or a weekend shift. I'd be working in Medical Records, which means the place has to be open every day, which means i could even end up working on Christmas day!

There are no easter/Christmas ect breaks, you get set holidays but you can only take them if it's convinient to them. :S

It's an amazing, well payed job but... the TOON... :'(

How often are you likely to work weekends?

If it's likely to be often, then based on your position you shouldn't bother taking it. If it's more like once a month, then you're unlikely to miss many games (we play a home game on average once every 2.3 weeks).

House prices are expected to drop still further so if you save enough; you'll have a good deposit on a house and have the advantage of being on the property ladder well before the average age of new buyers do.

The permanent job will allow you to do this whilst the (quite likely) short term contract will not.

I would go for it, I'm sure you will be able to get shift swaps, were not at home every week :)
I had to miss the Bolton match this year due to working but it's part and parcel of having a job these days.

    Take the well paid job!
I admire you're love of the toon but get the money in the bank.
Then hopefully when you're a little older you'll get promoted and then won't have to work over toon jobs!
You've got to do whats best for you and the toon will always be ther!

I worked as a chef for 10 years and it was basically 14/16 hour days, 6 days a week. I worked every Christmas, Easter, Bank holiday and weekend.

It's a job. If you have to do those hours, then you do it.

Seeing that your not at uni (or any form of education at present), I'd take the better paid job now as it will benefit you in the future.

There are some wise words of advice here Tash.

I think you have to ask yourself the questions:

How much longer can you stay living with your parents?
What job are you going to be doing in the future (to fund living costs and your season ticket)?
Would you rather watch the Toon now while you're living with your parents, but at the same time risk not being able to afford it later down the line? or Get a good job and be in the financial position in the future where you can watch the Toon every week?

    This.
Also - which job will give you the more adaptable skills and experience for other jobs in the future?
Which one will give you more opportunities for progression?
How often do both job opportunities come around - could you try one and go for the other at a later date if it isn't working out or vice versa?
Which one would you be happier at (not just thinking about the toon and now, but also the future)?
If you can't answer these questions, try drawing up a career plan for each and/or if connections is still around go speak to a career's advisor at one of those, they'll be more than happy to help you choose what's right for you.

You do know that part time jobs are for chicks, right?

Take the full time job, it's better paid and, whilst allowances will be made for you while you're still young, you won't stay young forever and the sooner you embark upon a proper career the better. May as well man-up now.

Also, soon or later you'll have to move out of your parents'. Presumably, in your case this will be into a halfway house or community care centre first. But at some point you'll have to make your own way in life.
