His ability to finish has been the one thing that has caught the eye in his fledgling career. He looks comfortable with either foot as well.
Will be interesting to see where Puel settles on the preferred roles of our attacking options

Maybe the Redmond comments eludes to our search for an attacking midfield player/winger rather than a striker...

He has a lot of great qualities, really hope it all comes together because he could be a proper fit for us.

If we play Long and Redmond up front their sheer speed will cause defences a real nightmare.....could be fun

But if we move Redmond infield, won't be needing a pacy winger?;)

With the right sort of coaching I think young Redmond could be a star of the future. He certainly has a lot to offer.......
Have to say Puel is probably one of a handful of coaches that can bring on youngsters. Should be interesting to see just how well Puel gets on in the premier and how many youngsters he brings through if he is allowed the right amount of time.
His playing career would suggest he can be fairly loyal....so lets hope we can keep him if he does well at this level.

Does anybody actually think that Redmond is remotely comparable to Mane? Beyond any discussion of impact, they're vastly different stylistically. Pretty much the only commonality is "fast, can dribble a bit".

What a 22 year old who frustrated people and had them moaning about his finishing and end product.... And two years later we sold for 34m???? No, you don't know what you're on about!!! <laugh>

Remotely yes. You've just identified where.

I think they main point here is the silly expectation that we get a like for like, as someone said the other day... Down the Mane aisle.

That's my point, too. If people look at Redmond as he is -- a talented but unpolished player who still needs to learn an awful lot to perform consistently -- I think they're likely to be happy with the transfer. He has to date been a winger whose preferred operating area is in front of the defense, with the ball at his feet. A very good crosser when he can be convinced to do so rather than cutting inside. He'll now be learning a new position for good measure. Mane is a player who does his damage in the box, who loves getting behind defenses and is a disciple of the Church of the Holy One-Two. He has a striker's mentality with the skillset of an attacking mid. Apples and thumbtacks.

If we insist on raising Redmond as Mane's replacement, we're likely to see a lot more criticism lobbed his way. He'll take quite a bit of patience; setting him out as a ready-made Mane 2.0 for this season is going to greatly reduce the degree to which people will lend him that patience.

I don't think he's a ready made replacement, but I think he could become a perfectly good replacement if developed to his potential. Again, remember people thought Mané was crap when he first arrived and for a large part of his first season.

Schad - nobody but nobody is setting him out as a ready made replacement. Nobody. I don't even see where you get that from. I actually think a huge effort has been made to say he isn't ready made,. The point is so many people and I mean SO MANY, are moaning we haven't replaced Mane... well we rarely replace like for like, we have to work at it. Sane may have been the answer, but are Saints going to get one like that?

I also think you may have overlooked the early Mane and the Mane from October to December last year. I am not sure the "Church of the Holy One-Two" is right either. What about the disciple of the "Keep hold of it and not release it when I can Church?" He was just as much a disciple of that.

Mane is an excellent player and I have always said potentially a world beater, but fans make me giggle. When he came, we had 6 months of moaning about him and 3 months of moaning about him last season ("only turns up to the big games".. "isn't trying because he wants to go to Man utd"..etc, etc) and now he has gone, he is utterly irreplaceable. Well he is not and although I am sure we will miss him, I am excited at the prospect of us turning Redmond or another signing into the "New" Mane... that is not to say a like for like, but a "New exciting" player for us.

Thierry Henry was constantly criticised until his second season at Arsenal when he eventually became a striker. He was pretty garbage at Juventus on the wing and his first season at Arsenal was still crossing without looking up first. Maybe Puel is alluding to something similar with Redmond.

I don't think the comparisons with Mane are fair tbh. Mane has played for teams that are pretty high up in their leagues so gets more opportunity to do what he does. Redmond has played as a youngster in the Championship and then for a poor Norwich side in the Prem. He will get twice as many opportunities to look good playing for us than he did for Norwich as well as better players and coaching to improve him.

He is in a similar position that Rodriguez was when he first came here being that he was playing for a lowly Prem side (us first season back) and did OK then played for a much better Prem side (our second season back) and did spectacularly well as a "wing forward"

Can I just add that this doesn't preclude him from being a failure and crap. So if he is, *please* don't go rooting out these posts saying "YOU SAID HE WAS THE NEW MANÉ" - that's not being said. It's "here's an exciting player with potential, he could go on to do really well, let's see".

(Not directed at you btw Schad, but I'm sure some would wrongly delight in digging this stuff up should he not work out).

I'm with you on this one, Fats. I was SO frustrated by Sadio about 85% of last season (and remember the collective sigh of disbelief and frustration from the crowd when he was given that penalty to take in an effort to kick start his scoring? And missed may I add)
Yes he had probably a handful of games where he was unbelievable but most of the time he was poor.
I've heard he's already missed a few chances to score for that scouse team in their friendlies and I look forward to the Anfield crowd getting on his back when he does that in league games)
Yes I'll miss him, but I'd miss Jose a hell of a lot more!
