The city of Newcastle has in the past produced top talent such as Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne amongst others. Michael Carrick also who is a Geordie born and bred but had to come through at West Ham before joining Spurs before becoming a world class player and winning big honours with Manchester United.

In the last few years we have managed to nurture Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll who are both at premier league level, now we have Remie Streete, Sammy Ameobi and Adam Campbell who are all looking to break into the first team. These are three players who are physically impressive, especially Sammy who has height, athleticism, strength as well as two good feet especially his left, but mentally and especially technically they seem to be lacking. This isn't the fault of the players but the system the youths are in and more so the standard of coaching, Sammy should be finding the crosses, displaying terrific dribbling, scoring his goals and it goes without saying, being a gem on the end of set pieces. Campbell should showing pace, an excellent short passing game and an excellent poaching prowess but instead he struggles to impress for Carlisle.

We need to review our approach to the under 18 side and make sure they get what they need to develop on a technical and mental level and of course make the most of their physical benefits. Who knows, maybe we can nurture our own Messi, Iniesta and Xavi. Let's start by nurturing competition for our current first team as well as buying British. I'm also pleased with Paul Dummet, credit to St Mirren for that.

I think loaning out players to more technical league has to be the answer as part of a good footballing education.
Chelsea take this approach and Bertrand seem to be making a step up. I know our own coaching needs looking at but i think this has to be at least looked at hopefully abeid does well in greece and comes back a better player as he will probably come back with a taste of success. But finding the rite league is key! I do think send british players abroad it will help their development.

I agree, Belgium is excellent at bringing kids through.

Abied, like Vuckic will only make it at a mid level European club in my opinion.

I still have my hopes for Haris as his technique is brilliant and he has a big frame and is still under 21... I'd loan him to genk or bruge to get him not only games in a technical league but get them brought up on winning things make them hungry for more success.

For a centre forward, attacking midfielder his vision, movement and footballing brain let him down for me. He isn't the goal threat that Gerrard, Totti is or the playmaker that Ozil or Iniesta is. He's just a strong attacking midfielder who should be plying his trade in the Eridivise or the lower tier of the Bundesliga.

A very good topic for a thread.
Unfortunately money is the root cause and the instant demand for success.
I think a few clubs seem to have the lions share of talent (Derby, Leeds etc...) and these clubs are almost acting as feeder clubs for the big boys.

I agree but we need to invest in the academy. I want us to develop a talented goalkeeper, a centre half, a well rounded full back and a central midfielder, a playmaker and a speedy right winger and a new Shearer/Sir Les type front man.

I want us to replace Jonas with Shane Ferguson, I want the deadwood gone such as Willo, Obertan, Gosling and Shola and Marveaux doesn't impress me either and I feel we can get more from Fergie/Sammy.

Well at least 2 of the young lads given the opportunity last night grabbed it with both hands. Fair play to Sammy who has endured a lot of criticism since breaking through but i s'pose he's an ameobi comes with the territory... He needs to build on this performance but by all accounts well done lad! Sound like fergie had a good game for brum h'way clarkie!

Fergie was top class for Birmingham last night (at least on highlights and match report). I would maybe bring him back into the fold. Sammy did well last night but has it all to prove. I think he would be the better candidate for a loan to be honest as Fergie is better equipped than him for PL football where Sammy just looks lost.

Fergies looked class from the first time I saw him down at Chelsea a few years ago, just waltzed down the touchline beating everybody that came at him.

I thought he'd have been a regular by now.

He's retained till 2016 anyway so we might see a bit more of him, even if he is only being shown in the shop window.

Fergie's problem is his natural position is the one area of the pitch where we are almost overloaded with options: Santon (full Italian international), Haidara (always looked better than Santon to me) Dummet (good enough to have displaced Haidara).

I think his natural role is as a winger. When Pards tried to convert him to a full back, he just seemed a bit unsure postionally (which can of course be trained), but more than anythign found his attacking instinct getting him caught upfield.

I think Pards would be happier at Norwich, we could do a straight swap for him and CH.

just my view guys ...but I think us and other pl clubs seem to look for strength and size ..instead of technical ability with the ball ..being stressed and encouraged

too many of these lanky type players ...

after all the some of the best players in world and are very small ..some small kids just don't get a chance and are overlooked ..

and that's not helped by the standard of refs aswell ..who seem to allow the push and pull ..which at high levels .they get caught out by good euro refs ..

    size aint everything ..
