I just thought i'd cheer up some Saints' fans that were maybe a little disappointed at failing to beat the Skates yesterday...The point that we gained now means that Brighton cannot catch us this season, therefore making us the South Coast kings....
The point we gained also put us top and put Portsmouth 6 points adrift of safety... I can see why they celebrated it like a cup win!
As if you wouldn't have celebrated a 94th minute equaliser against your local rivals in the same manner.....
Whether you were top, bottom or mid-table, you would have and you know it. Don't try to claim otherwise.
What was sad was your fans trying to claim bragging rights, just because we never battered you yesterday.
Fact of the matter is (yes, fact): Portsmouth celebrated as if they'd won the cup, for putting their rivals top and putting themselves six points adrift of safety. Add whatever semantics you want into that, it's still fact. Also it's a shame there was no real winner this season (no matter how many "bragging rights" Portsmouth claim, it was two draws) because it'll be a while until we face each other in proper competition again.
Adkins mentioned that he'd like us to have bragging rights, but added look at the relative position of the teams. However, I do understand Pompey celebrating,,always seems better if you rescue a point than if you lose two. Considering our relative position, getting two draws against us is a good result.
Fact of the matter is: Portsmouth celebrated like that for scoring a last minute equaliser against their rivals and getting a point which could be vital. By scoring that equaliser, we were not putting ourselves six points from safety, but we were putting ourselves not seven points from safety. That's the difference. You scored a last minute equaliser in the 94th minute, you'd have celebrated in the same way.
Hates me to say it but we all know he has a point...if it had happened the other way round yesterday I would have gone away delighted rather than feeling like a sack of ****
Of course he does. I only have to reverse the roles and wonder what I would have done if my team from the bottom of the league had just scored to pull the Home top team back to 2-2 in the dying minutes of injury time. I'd celebrate like a bloody loony, and so would every other Saints fan.
Mr Lampras is entirely right about the celebration., and the Pompey fans were entitled to be elated. Until the Bristol result, at which point the brighter of them would be feeling less euphoric.
I totally agree with Pompey Lapras - if you team had scored any equaliser in the 94th miunute against your fiercest rivals, any normal person would have responded in such a celebratory fashion. I think Pompey will get out of the relegation zone. Any team who puts in an away performance like yesterday's has got enough within themselves to see sufficient points secured to finish above the relegation zone. There is no way that PFC are going to be relegated at the end of the season - fate always seems to side with Pompey no matter what adversity if thrown at them. Granted that the league positions tell a tale, but let's not forget that Pompey had 10 points deducted and their current fate is somewhst artificial even if well within Football League rules. As far as bragging rights are concerned, surely they must still rest with Portsmouth as we have failed to beat them in the last to matches. However, I would like to extend the debate a bit further. Does our failure to beat Portsmouth is the last two home games and to concede six goals in the process mean that St Mary's has lost it's fear factor as far as PFC are concerned? Portsmouth seem to have a resiliance about them and where most teams would have folded and given up, there is definately a never say die spirit about that club. I think they have been jammy and ridden their luck but assuming the both teams are still playing in the same league next year, I wonder whether we would still finish above them.
I have said before and I'll say again......Pompey deserve what they got yesterday. They came for a point and got one. Did you not notice how it picked up their game yesterday when they scored their first goal? You cannot legislate for such exceptional goals........I expect their manager is saying why the heck haven't they been scoring goals like that all season. Neither player will score a better goal for the rest of their career!! They wanted it more than we did for what ever reason. NA did not get that through to our lads. They seem to doubt their own capabilities, are often pushed off the ball too easily at times. They certainly did not expect to be kicked off the park in the manner they were at times yesterday. However that is the way desperate teams seem to go. A lot of the the teams at the lower end seem to turn to these tactics and it is a definite weakness in our preparation and presentation. This in my opinion is why we loose to so many of the lower league positioned teams.
Well it's not artificial, unless you mean in the playing sense only. Any Saints fan would undoubtedly point to the fact that Pompey have been throwing far too much money at their squad and have therefore attracted players they could not afford. So is that artificial..? That aside, yes Pompey teams do have a certain resilience about them, but only when it comes to playing Saints, in my opinion. Unlike you, I'm undecided about their Championship fate. They may not have enough in the tank, so to speak, unless they can look upon every opposition as they do us. Now if they could do that, they'd easily survive the drop.
Portsmouth needed to win yesterday...really can't see them getting out of this. If they do, they've earnt it.
Nothing is easy when it comes to Portsmouth. Glad people agree with my view though! Coincidentally, Farnborough fans received similar comments after their celebration when they scored a stoppage time equaliser against Woking last season.
