Who thinks we should reinvest in our radio station? I was always fan and for me, Radio Solent are just too dull and focuses on Pompey and B'muff too much for my liking I say bring back Saints OWN station!
Agree about Solent, but trouble is, the Saint radio station never ever made anywhere near a profit, even when we were in the Prem and going to the Cup final. So, with a choice of spending £200,000 a year minimum on our own station, or actually receiving income from the BBC for broadcasting our games, its a no brainer for Cortese.
I was living up north when that was on and had it on my sky settings. I hated it as it was so saints bias that they didn't commentate when thd other team had the ball; you didn't know what was happening on the pitch.
Solent is not much better. We don't need Merrington or the commentators opinion on every single passage of play....just state the facts. I think they should split the frequencies earlier and later though for the pre match and post match. I don't need to hear what the chav Cotteril has to say about another narrow defeat.
The problem with the in-house radio was that apart from matches the listener numbers were on the floor. As CBK said it was a money sink. I think Solent does a good job, no commentator is going to be completely popular but it's not bad.
Ah yes, I am always impressed by the amazing insights from Dave Merrington. Phrases such as; (5minutes before half-time) "what they don't what to do now Adam, is to let in a goal", or (7 minutes before the final whistle) "I just feel, Adam, that the side that scores a goal a this stage, will probably go on to win the game." Could any other station match this astonishing, perceptive summary? Well, perhaps they could. Do we need to invest in a Radio station? Na!
I'd rather see money spent on getting a better pitchside announcer. I find Stuart Dennis to be cringeworthy. I'm not sure if he's being replaced by that "roving reporter" who was at the Walsall game, but he was a bit over the top as well.
Saints Radio is a no go........There just is not the same interest in the Saints team as say a Man U Arsenal or Chelsea. At best I think the Saints radio had a maximum 35000 listeners, if that. There just was not enough listeners for the advertising Gurus to advertise for the radio to pay its way. As for Solent..........When we were in the premier we were given the priority over Pompey and Bournemouth. Now we are in the same league as Pompey it will be equal until one of us clearly gives them a listener boost. The Beeb usually knows which side of the bread to butter. As for Merrington......Oh dear........what a plonker!.............Analysing the obvious.......Stating the obvious......Totally misunderstanding the tactics being used........trying to be an expert at things he just plainly does not understand....... Don't get me started on him, he is the only person I know that could get a degree in boredom!!!!
Saints radio was a nice idea but was another example of where we went wrong financially. It's a mistake to think too big, especially where it doesn't pay.
The Saint was a car crash financially, though it was pretty good for us as fans it was such a boneheaded business decision that there's no way Don Cortese will consider starting it up again.
I liked the commentary ad the post-match phone-in, but it really didn't make financial sense and the programming between matchdays was awful. I would like it if Solent didn't keep flipping around and stayed on seperate frequencies for the post-match reaction, then each team would get more satisfactory coverage. I'm not sure why they interrupt a main match for non-league updates - I'm sure most listeners would rather have some momentum.
