My own point of view is I'm glad the "gas " will be getting their stadium and I hope with all the millions of pounds they are receiving they will pause, think and spend a fair wedge of it to the memory of the people the ground was named for... This article is from solely a rugby point of view and this is a paragraph from it.. ' The recent disgraceful decision of Bristol’s council to allow the demolishing of their Memorial Ground, despite its status as a War Memorial to the dead from both World Wars, has at least finally answered that question: they will not be playing on the Mem in 10 years and probably not in 5 years. Now they are released from that destructive purgatory they seem set on moving in with Landsdown’s other club, football’s Bristol City, at Ashton Gate in the south of the city and want to say good bye to the Mem either in the Premiership or by gaining promotion.' http://www.rugbyfancast.com/2013/02/blogs/ship-shape-and-bristol-fashion Now what contributions will we receive.......From the Destructive Purgatory Lot..?
I have been a supporter of both City and Bristol Rugby now for 60 years. I for one, will be very sad to see the demolition of the Memorial Ground. But unfortunately and entirely due to the mismanagment of Bristol Rugby some years ago, they "gave away" their spiritual home to Dunford's Bristol Rovers. That they have been able to afford to stay as tenants, has been a bonus for the Club and their supporters. But if Bristol supporters really do want Premiership rugby, they must do the same as most City fans will have to do if we move to Ashton Vale. and what some Gasheads will also find. Bite the bullet and move on! Because the alternative for Bristol Rugby, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers is to stagnate at stadiums that are so out of date; without decent accomodation for the paying public, attendances will not increase sufficiently to support rugby or football at a higher level than even the second tier. And City are and Bristol Rugby would be also struggling to maintain current levels without the investment by Steve Lansdown. I will welcome Bristol Rugby at Ashton Gate or Vale and please bring The Gates with you so all future supporters will be able to remember what sacrifices were made so that others who follow can enjoy their rugby and football in peace.
