But - what are your thoughts about the theory that over spending ( which I submit features heavily at Christmas time ) is a major cause of the economic problems which the country's population bring upon itself. Too many people spend money they neither have nor can later repay to afford themselves luxuries - especially at Christmas - and thereby saddling themselves with debt. I'm happy with the idea of financial credit - used wisely it is a great way to purchase goods earlier than if you had to 'save up' the full amount of cash - but I cringe at the gratuitous use of credit cards without any thought of the consequences by the users ( including some of my family and friends .) As a nation we need to show a little more restraint when it comes to money we do not have or likely to have any time soon - and to lower our expectations of our finances - I recently bought a new car ( cash ) - a humble Peugeot - because I could not afford a Porche ! - well I could - but the insurance is a bit steep and did not justify the outlay. Cancelling Christmas may be devestating to the economy of our traders - but any lack of spending on our part may be to our individual benefit in the long term !
I'm moving back in a couple of week's time after 13 years abroad. I'm not looking forward to it at all. I've already had to chuck out all my porn because the UK's Victorian porn laws won't let me bring my DVDs into the country.
