At least two teams in this division will be playing for silverware next season, and this bit of siverware is of particular significance, as it says on the tin, FRIENDLY, Norwich versus Sunderland, in the milk cup, as it was then, Norwich won, I lost ã50 to my Norwich supporting mate, was in the Sultanate Of Oman at the time. Now I know theres no money given to the winner, but I know Sunderland fans will be the most welcome fans in all the land , at Norwich, and I also know Norwich fans will be given hero`s welcomes in Sunderland. Man U, and the likes can never win this trophy, this one is special, also In memory of the lad who lost his life on the train, Ive never forgotten, nor will many of you, so bring it on and welcome. Our town is your town, call it a city if you like, but it wassent then, remember, Ipswitch and Newcastle are not elligable, because plain and simply put they are not FRIENDLY. Come on up folks, our welcome is better than it ever was, because as sure as anything Im coming down your end, as soon as the fixture comes out. Will be booking flights and hotels, got a lot of ex RAF mates in that area. A bit of catching up to do.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,congrats on the promotion, well deserved.
I have fond memories of the day at Wembley all those years ago and subsequesnt visits to Roker Park. The day of the final must have been a dream for the stewards and police as we all mingled inside and out of the ground without a single incident that I can recall. Same with the FA Cup semi at Hillsborough, fans streaming out of the ground at the end, hand shakes, hat and scarf swaps everywhere and no hint of aggression. Just a lot of wounded Canaries having lost out on the prize of the final. I do not know how many Norwich fans still think of the 'friendly cup' though, after all it was 26 years ago but I do know Norwich fans still have a liking for Sunderland and we are liked in return. Whoever wins the 2 games, lets hope the relationship between our 2 great clubs remains as solid as ever.
Great post Bill. I was just thinking about the Norwich lad who was killed on the train that day. The Milk Cup Final was the only time that I have ever travelled on the train to watch a match. Well done to the Canaries. Delighted to see you back where I have always felt you belong. Followed your results even in the third tier with great interest. Smashing traditional football club with a good ground and great supporters. Bill took all the words right out of my mouth with post. Welcome back!
