On October 4, 1983 on Nevada's Black Rock Desert, the UK's Richard Noble, aboard Thrust 2, set a World Land Speed Record of 634.051MPH, eclipsing the 13 year old record of American Gary Bagelich's Blue Flame, it wouldn't be the last time Noble was to be involved with the search for a faster car.

14 year later, on 5 September 1997, the Scot headed the project of Thrust SSC, which under the command the Royal Air Force fighter pilot Andy Green lifted the record to 713.990 MPH, again on the Black Rock Desert.

3 weeks later on the same site, Green raised the bar to the present standard of 760.343 MPH.

Below is some insight into the push for not just the new record, but the Holy Grail of land speed records, 1000 MPH. At the moment it looks like a two horse race between the UK's Bloodhound SSC and Australia's Aussie Invader 5R. With the experience already under their belt, Bloodhound has a massive advantage.

There doesn't seem to a serious US challenger at the moment after North American Eagle crashed last August and took the life of Jessi Combs, who holds the Women's World Land Speed Record.
