Tell me to **** off if you don't think this needs a thread but seeing as it's the single most important trophy of them all I think it deserves one so will probably ignore you. Can we wrestle the trophy from the grasping fingers of Arsenal, for they have made it their very own for a long, long time. It feels like forever. Or will they just go and confound the world by finishing third? Liverpool are the form horse and are coming up behind at a fast canter and Saints still look good while Spurs have grabbed the odd point from seemingly losing positions. We are, however, still clinging on to it. Just. Will we do it? Will we ****. Discuss.
None of us are playing well and I would be surprised if any can win 3 in a row. We play arsenal, chelsea, city, liverpool and spurs before the end of the season. Only Chelsea worry me as a certain defeat as the others are as unpredictable as ourselves.
We need to beat them all, it's as simple as that. If we beat Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal, and City come to think of it, then we'll be third. I say simple, considering we're struggling to beat mid-table sides it won't be.
By far the most important trophy. Not because United are involved but because getting it is so damn important. Winning the title is nothing in comparison. Most people here now accept that it will be a massive achievement (and not just a minimum requirement). The RS may be the form team but like us they are grinding out results and on top of that they are getting massive favours from refs (envelopes and Brenda go together I believe). In fact I think that they are getting as many decisions FOR them as the Chavs are getting AGAINST them. Arsenal are starting to motor. They seem solid and know their best team. I see them as certain top 4. Spurs will be spurs. I thought they were going to be more consistent with Kane on form. But how did they manage to draw against West Ham? Southampton are so toothless that it is unbelievable. They played well up to the last 2 thirds but then nothing. Pelle was draedful. But even then they should have 2 penalties, one was cast iron. United's away form is so crap that they have to win all their home matches. And in addition make sure they don't get beat by the CL challengers. The RS match will be massive (but don't hold your breath for any pens to be given against the RS). IT will go down to the wire. At least I hope so as last season we were out of it weeks before the end.
If United don't get Champions League Football next season will Rooney stay another season? And, are you likely to lose some big names? TBH (and it's hard not to sound rude) United looked anything but top 4 versus Swansea - West Ham looked far more cohesive although without Carroll they are mid table at best.
I don't know. I can't see Rooney leaving as a result of it, I reckon he's here to stay now. van Persie would go, Falcao would go and, if rumours of PSG still being after Di Maria are true, so would he. He does not look a man who is happy in his job. I can see van Gaal leaving though. Especially if it's Liverpool we miss out to. Of all the rubbish that Moyes spouted, that would be as unforgivable as any of it.
van gaal wont leave after a season regardless of whether you glory hunters want him to. agree with all your top players leaving though except wazza.
just looking at it from the clubs pov and also van gaals. you sack him and then youll be back to square one again, anyone with an ounce of logic in thm knows this
Yeh I doubt van Gaal is going anywhere right now. I am still confident we will get top 4 but even if we dont it would be a bad decision to start all over again.
What is square one? It's not like he'll have left having established a foothold at the club. IF we don't get top four then we'll not really have made a great deal of progress anyway. He's got it in his grasp, paid enough for players, not brought in ones we really need, he's in other words been given every opportunity to finish fourth as the minimum. Fourth. The target clubs like Arsenal set. We're not even asking for champions or runners up, we're after fourth place. With what he's been given to work with he really should piss it but so much messing about means that right now it looks very much in the balance. If he continues to **** about with the side and not allow it to form any sort of cohesion and find any sort of consistent form then he'll deserve all the stick coming to him. It's still an if though but if we lose out and Liverpool get it he can go, he won't warrant another season.
new manager, new philosophy etc grass isnt always greener on the other side. if you finish say 5th and judge it as not good enough and sack him, you might get a manager whos even more incompetent. now i think about it, i wouldnt mind seeing that happen
We are a team who finished 7th last season despite spending 70million and having a highly experienced premier league manager and a squad with about 100 premier league winners medals. If he finished 5th and close to top 4 it would be quite a bit better than 7th and 15 points off the top. Wouldnt be great and would be a huge let down but it would give us europe (CL qualification from europa) and some improvement on the season before. I think he needa a second season to finish the clear out too. Plus he will have had a year to assess the premier league which will put him in a better position for next season. Unless a premier league winning manager becomes available tyen changing would be a terrible idea. That gives us 3 options. One of which is Wenger.
Fifth isn't an improvement given the money thrown at it and if we finish fifth then we will be at least fifteen points off top. At least. I'm not necessarily saying he SHOULD be sacked, I'm saying there is a very strong case for him being so if we don't get top four. And I also would not challenge the decision at all. Hopefully we get fourth and he gets a crack at another season but right now I have massive doubts about his ability, both in getting fourth and his ability in general. I don't like what I see. I'm not some wet behind the ears kid who's decided football is awesome because his mates at school like it. I don't like what I see based on decades of watching Manchester United and top class football at close range. I haven't given much thought to who would replace him just yet. We wouldn't be short of applicants.
We were 15 off 4th last season. More like 30 off the top. I think he underestimated the league. More about physicality than technique. He learned pretty quickly but needs to add more physical players to the side nlw.
If he gets fourth fine, I've got no issue at all with him staying on. In that respect progress will have been made and he can hopefully kick on. He's making a mess of it at the moment though and things don't look great. He'll have the massive pressure of Liverpool breathing down his neck soon and what that does to the mind set of our fans. A bit of something new for him to underestimate at his peril.
Far too early to pull the trigger. I would say let's see if we get into CL first. If we don't then we'll consider whether the events of the season show that he should stay. My view is that even if we don't get CL we should stick with him. Not because he is the best manager around but because chopping and changing in such a short time makes it difficult for the next manager anyway. Stability is a good thing and the team cannot play any worse.
All the teams involved can claim that its in their own hands with twelve games to go. Spurs may be four points adrift but since Man utd and Arsenal have to play each other, at least one will drop points. Saints don't play either of the sides they need to overtake but the same. Man Utd having to play just about all of their rivals means they will have a major say in who out of their rivals will get top four, whether that be as well or instead of themselves. Personally, I'd rather win the EL than get top four. Trophy and CL football next season is better than no trophy and CL football next season.
