Is it just me or has the quality in referee performances taken a somewhat sharp dip this season? This doesn't come from me getting angry at my team not getting the decisions but actually seeing the opposing teams get bad decisions as well. It also comes from watching neutral games and feeling that the standard is low there, too. What do you all feel? Also, what has been your worst refereeing decisions so far this season? For me, it has to be Shaun Wright-Phillips' goal being disallowed when it was onside, resulting in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa for QPR. Edit: by "refereeing" I also refer to the performances of the linesmen.
To be fair...it was the assistant ref who gave SWP offside. Anyway....having just watched that Lee Probert performance....he is, without doubt, the worst ref I've ever seen. And that's saying something!!
He gave fouls for good tackles, let fouls go (the bodycheck on Taarabt was so blatant it's beyond belief!!), missed a blatant hand ball for their goal, missed a nailed on penalty for them and, overall, had the worst possible game!!
Worst refereeing decisions: SWP disallowed goal, Villa penalty, Hutton's handball on the line not being given.
What would be the best way to improve refereeing standards? I think they should bring a points system in. High scores will get you more important games, low scores will get you the less important games and very low points will see you being taken out of the game for a period for more training. What do you recon? You may ask who would decide on the scores? Well, a panel of rotating staff should be made by the PL or FA who would review the games and look at key decisions.
How about use TV replays on the big decisions that lead to goals and if the Ref or Linesman have made a mistake 20 second burst of electricity into them through their buzzer thingys on their arms.... .....Sorted
Pay them according to their assessment. Low assessment low payment high assessment full pay. Or maybe deduct £s for each duff decision.....might make them less arrogant. Seems now that the can be as bad as they want and they get the same fee and it's testicles to a good performance.
Yeah, maybe something pay related. Or maybe bonus related? Actually... we should have to dangle carrots infront of them to get good earnest work out of them.
While i will admit that some decisions this season have been way off the mark, i thought that the 'handball' today by Graham simply wasnt. He clearly tries to move his arm away from the ball as it comes in to contact with his hip area.
I'm glad someone mentioned this. The standard of refereeing this season IMO has taken a nosedive, I don't know whether referees are being told to clamp down on certain types of contact from their superiors etc but it is getting to the stage where we are seeing ridiculous decisions and red cards being overturned almost every week. All you can ask for is consistency and apart from Webb (despite making a horrific mistake on Monday) and a few others are giving us that. 1. Newcastle penalty at Old Trafford 2. Everton penalty at Sunderland 3. Wolves non-penalty and disallowed goal against Newcastle 4. Balotelli red card against Liverpool 5. Cahill red card against Spurs 6. Stoke vs Spurs (I don't have all day to list them all) 7. Norwich vs Blackburn 8. Hutton vs WBA etc... If we're talking linesman then we could go on all day. Man Utd vs Chelsea - 2 offside goals not seen Stoke vs Spurs - A goal clearly onside wrongly ruled as offside Arsenal vs Liverpool - Clear offside goal ruled as onside
As a qualified referee, (level 6). I can only agree with many of the comments about the poor standard of referring this season. However, the game is so fast now and of such high intensity, the referees are under a constant barrage of pressure, from the first whistle to the lastâ¦I have refereed u11 games and they can be pretty hair raising to say the least. So have a lot of respect for the men in black in the professional games. Many refs are professionals, but the linesmen are not. This needs to be addressed quickly. All match officials should be of the highest quality. I believe we should have a second referee watching the proceedings on television cameras as they do in major rugby games. Who can adjudicate in major crucial decisions. Offsides, disallowed goals, handballs. etc. The ref on the pitch is wired up, so will not take that long to get the CORRECT decision from the second referee. Cameraâs have to be installed on the goalines, it is laughable that soccor seems to have fallen well behind the likes of tennis, rugby, cricket and even snooker that have embraced the technology of instant replay on television⦠Time for the football governing bodies to get their collective heads out of their arses, and see whatâs going on in the real world⦠Stan
I cant really buy that mate, the ball was played from about a yard off a QPR player and straight at Graham, physically impossible for him to do anything about it, I think we're just trying to blame someone for our shocking defending for that goal.
