your eyes can't see to the fps that the movement is going, it's only a few frames but sped up to a high speed, the trains not 'actually' moving in any direction, so it's the way the mind sees it, it's a two way thing, forward or backwards, really simple really
I'm not certain, but I'd guess it's something like the Xmas type lights that seem to run round the wire, when really they're just turning on and off in sequence. The train carriage is effectively door then panel. So if each one turns on and off in sequence, your eyes would follow it either way. Maybe!!!
