I saw a bit of ITV's Daybreak this morning. Also watched a bit of Sky's breakfast show. Didn't see any BBC but I've looked at their web-site. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. No mention of THAT event on this day 12 years ago. It's as though it never happened, yet it shaped foreign policy (and will continue to do so) for many years for both the US and the UK.
Nobody cares, to be honest. A bit like Hillsborough. I think many people probably don't notice, because they've heard the ****witted Americanism of '9/11' so many times over the past eleven years that they think it happened in the second week of November. It's still the lead story in the US and there was a lot about it here on the 10th anniversary, but I suppose they're not going to do lot on it every single year. Surely it got a mention somewhere? Nothing even on Yahoo, but an entertaining story about a golfer being attacked by a croc in Cancun.
It's trending on twitter which means that people know it's the anniversary today but the mainstream media in the UK are choosing to ignore it.
Anyone outside of America who sits whining about it, who doesn't know anyone who died, is a **** or a *****. I'm surprised the media haven't managed to use it in some way to promote a wonderful, multicultural society, as they do with everything else
Do the families of the terrorists mourn the passing of their children/family member on September 11th?
They aren't 'choosing to ignore it' as you say. It just isn't something that needs to be reported every year. Do we see much coverage every year for the London bombings? No. America still reports it. So it isn't as if nobody cares. There are more important things to worry about at this current moment.
I was thinking that, morning on my way to work, how many pages would be about the Rememberance to 9/11. Like you i was shocked.
Every 10 years is fine. I wouldn't want a long report on it every year. What would be the point? There are so many catastrophic events in human history that we could probably spend every day in remembrance of something.
I thought the exact same thing this morning. Why do we celebrate/mourn things that happen in America more than our own culture? Have we become that saturated with media that we now depend more on Americanisation than we think? At what point did we realise that our own style and character is being shaped by a country we initially helped to create? There were more British people watching the results of the American Presedential Election than there were people watching our Prime Ministorial Election. Which is absolutely appaling. The HMS Titanic sinking isn't reported about every year by Americans, nor are our disasters, our murders, our crimes, our military activity or pretty much anything we do. And yet recentley we've had in depth media coverage of a cinema shooting, hurricane Katrina, the NYC Mayoral campaign, two Presidential campaigns, the Emmys, the Golden Globes, Miley Cyrus getting her arse out and Kanye West naming his baby North (like that's ****ing news?!).
It happened on 9/11 and that's why there's no coverage today, the anniversary is nearly 2 months away.
Brits died in the World Trade Centre on that day. it sparked other attacks, including in London, and we've been to war for the last 10 years because of it. Comparing this to Hillsborough or an award ceremony etc is ridiculous. 9/11 was on of the biggest events in history.
So was the Battle of Agincourt, and nobody even mentioned that in my school history lessons. Isn't that appalling?
