The difference between Smith and Mulllins is that Mullins already has an s on the end and you can't use a letter in the name for apostrophe purposes. You have to add apostrophe s where it's possessive or es when it's not eg The Joneses like going to Spain.

I was walking out in Stratford upon Avon today, passed a barge called “Two Pea’s in a Pod”.
Nah, I’m nailed on for Compassion Tsar.
Ah, but I used the apostrophe as in their house rather than pluralising the family.
The thing I posted said it was down to personal taste or style. Shall we agree that we’re both right and move on to whether it’s ‘Keev’ or ‘Kyev’?
