Classic! did anyone see Politics Live today? Will "Self-opinionated" and Mark Francois had a stare out over Will's comments.

Sadly this clip ends too early as they were like 2 boxers for about 30 seconds after. Ian Dale tweeted and called self "an utter cock". <laugh>

Self tried to give Mark Francois the death stare. Francois returned it until Self had to look away. He is one sad example of a journalist.

This is an example of what I previously referred to as political correctness taken too far. I listened to the radio this morninig (Desert Island Discs) to hear a black artiste/actress (I didn't catch the name) whose work is highly regarded by many - not just luvvies in Islington. She referred to herself as a woman of colour and other notable women of colour for the strides they had made. Just remember that this is perfectly acceptable but mistakenly refer to someone as being coloured as Amber Rudd did and apologised immediately for (quite genuinely) and all hell breaks loose.

Apparently it is offensive because it is old fashioned hailing from a less liberal time when the world was divided into White and non-White. There is an assumption that this meant then and still means today s that only Whites mattered and were superior and that anyone who wasn't was therefore inferior. What cobblers. It stereotypes anyone who referred to coloured people as automatically racially prejudiced. You are not and neither am I. But we must both remember that if we refer to colour at all it must be that the person is of colour. That is perfectly acceptable. So I am led to believe!
"Coloured" was and is still a term that upsets a lot of people Yorkshire, it certainly was used mostly in a derogatory racist manner. SB has provided some relevant basic history in his post above. Nothing to do with political correctness or not imo.

Amazing how all Brexiteers are '****s' now? <doh> It can be argued both ways as Self did say 'probably'... although I actually know Self and he is a '****'. He thinks he is better than everyone else when clearly he is not.

Francois was discussing the 500 page agreement and Self tried to mock it so Francois said "have you actually read all 500 pages of this"? Self replied "yes", which you could tell he was clearly lying.

I thought Francois did okay today. Who was stupid little girl with the pierced nose at the other end? <doh> Why do they put these stupid people on TV?

Yes, Francois did ok. The irony is that Self appeared to admit he was pro-Brexit, just not for the nationalistic reasons he attributes (wrongly) to the 17.4 million.

He says stuff for effect.

As to the whinging student at the other end, never seen her before in my life. If I was Remain, I'd be p'd off they didn't get anyone more lucid than her to make whatever case Remainers have (which is not much, admittedly :emoticon-0100-smile).

In the same way that Self didn't call all Brexiteers racist, I didn't say they are all ****s. I said Mark Francois is a ****, which he is.

I expect better of you, Goldie. He didn't attribute anything to the 17.4 million.

All dogs have noses. Not everything with a nose is a dog.

Your judging my comment on the extract of what Self said as posted by Ellers. Self said much more than that - I saw the whole program and he said exactly what I quoted, that he favoured Brexit but not for the nationalistic reasons that Brexiteers voted for Brexit.

On the other point, he said "Every racist and antisemite in the country voted for Brexit." I agree that doesn't mean he's claiming that every Brexiteer is a racist or anti-semite, but it is a slur by association and, as I say in an earlier post, it's plain wrong because there are many anti-semites that are Remainers

How do you know Will Self Ellers? A very difficult man to have a conversation with I’d imagine.

He’s a chaotic person, and doesn’t do himself any favours when he’s on the telly, plus of course as an intellectual the great British public will mistrust and dislike him. Bit of an embarrassment sometimes. However he’s written some really good novels (especially when he was a junkie in the Nineties) and has undoubtedly made a more significant and stimulating contribution to British public life than Mark Francois, who, as Strolls notes, is a ****.

In my opinion.

I guess it’s just something that changes with time and what was deemed as ok years back has now been decided, by whoever, to be offensive.
For example we used to refer to my mate whose mum was white and dad black as ‘half caste’, and it was just normal and not meant as offensive....I think if I called my Mrs that now, she’d rip my dick off.
Not too sure she likes the fact I call my daughter ‘fuzzy wuzzy’ to be fair.

That's true enough. I thought you wouldn't because of your aversion to arguments being made fully rather than succinctly. he certainly fails on that count as every sentence is a paragraph or two long and simply designed, I suspect to show off his vocabulary and hail his superior intelligence.

He's a pompous, contrary twat who very occasionally comes up with something mildly perceptive. In terms of general approach, I have him aligned with Martin Amis

Yes. The danger of over-generalising. That's why it is wrong also for some to call those with an opposite view a twat or a muppet as an instant response

I accept that partly. But the way people react to it today, not 50, or even 15 years ago is a hallmark of modern political correctness. Whether Diane Abbott was genuinely offended or simply making political capital her reaction would have been acceptable in my view if she had not made her remarks and had accepted the apology and its sincerity immediately. But no she had to make a political point of it because it was Amber Rudd and she had said something which was incorrect according to current political behaviour.

The same goes for the use of the abbreviation 'Paki'. It has become known as a term of abuse and in certain quarters it would certainly be frowned upon - parents would tell their children that you should not use that word because it causes offence. ie it is politically incorrect. However I have been involved in cases where witnesses have referred to a Paki or the Paki grocer/waiter because the person is of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin. In some cases the 'victim' himself has not felt insulted because he understood the word to describe him accurately. At the time I was actually defending a young Pakistani man charged with affray in an Asian restaurant. As part of my case I put to a White diner that he had referred to the waiter as a Paki and suggested to him that this was offensive and liable to incite a violent response from other Asian diners. He told us that there was nothing wrong with calling him a Paki because that is what he was - He had not been offended by it The white diner also looked bemused because he had referred to the waiter as a Paki in his evidence and did not think he was saying anything inaccurate or offensive. Both the waiter and the white diner were credible witnesses telling the truth. My client was convicted in due course because his evidence was not credible an it was reasonably clear to all who heard him that he had been using his race to excuse his own appalling behaviour that night. Fuelled by alcoholic drink which of course, he should not have been consuming as a devout muslim.

Before I condemn someone for using the term today I would want to know the circumstances and that person's reaction when it is pointed out to him / her what he or she has said. To do otherwise is indeed an extreme form of political correctness.
