Stan I am so sorry to hear this and completely disgusted by the whole thing.I cannot believe this could happen...and in Leamington (middle England) Spa too.

Thanks Beth. My son Will will always carry the evidence, the surgeon said that there is little chance of successfully rebuilding his ear, so he’ll have a dent out of the top of it forever. What they are doing now is trying to prevent necrosis, which is too terrifying to think about.

Some concern that his mate, Manny, will not want to take it further. He’s a bright lad, at Liverpool Uni, but he does not want to engage with the police, ever. We can guess why, whether it is fact based or received (un)wisdom. Will is going to ask him as a personal mates thing.

To add to Stan's unpleasant story, just seen one of the Slovakian lads I'm working with in Bristol. His face is black and blue and he has a cigarette burn hole on his hand. He was out and about after the Bristol city millwall game yesterday. Big fight apparently. Can't decipher whether he was involved purposely or accidentally, but knowing him reasonably well, I'd say the latter. Poor sod, he's in a bit of a state and feeling sore and sorry for himself. His mates from Slovakia are hatching plans, but I fear his attackers may be 120 miles east by now.

Just been talking to the police, they are taking this very seriously and will be visiting him in hospital, where he will have to stay for 2-3 days after op because the big risk is infection. So on top of everything as a self employed builder he will be losing his income. Bank of mum and dad will naturally step in but I am learning fast that being a victim of a crime can have many nasty implications.

Funny you should mention your son. My eldest, like G's son is a bricklayer and can knock down a bull with a right hander. When I mentioned this to him he was well up for a trip to Leamington Spa!!

I think my lad has a severe case of wounded pride as well, he has been in a few scrapes (all arising from genuine situations, in his head at least) and has always held his own. He has zero body fat but is strong as an ox through his work and incredibly aggressive from his rugby days. This was his first experience of being jumped by superior numbers completely unprovoked.

My wife has just pointed out that if we turn Leamington into the leafy shires version of Dodge City it might adversely effect house prices.......

Frankly mate I think the chances of getting these twats are extremely slim. It is an incredibly rare event for Leamington (plenty of drunken brawls but few coordinated planned racist attacks), much more common up the road in Coventry, which is where we reckon they were from. The boy knows most of the ‘characters’ in Leamington and is sure it was none of them. It’s going to depend on DNA (there being any, and whoever tried to bite his ear off being on a database) and CCTV - whether they can be identified with hoods down.

Of course I wouldn’t publish their names on here, but if caught and convicted I will supply them on request......

I had a lesson today just next to the arch de triomphe. The protestors did this to a small business selling motorbikes. This is where they lose me. Protest and voice your concern if you feel you are being treated unfairly, but what good does it do to smash the shop window of a small independent motorbike shop, as I saw today?

Cheers Dave, he’s on the way home now, back to outpatients on Friday. Good news, they either think risk of infection is low, or at least lower outside hospital. He’s going to stay with us for a bit, correctly assuming that it will be a more gentle environment than the house he shares with a bunch of other builders (who have been texting us hourly to see how he is, the big softies).
