Trump's withdrawal strategy was naive and risky, and went with his lack of understanding about anything that happened beyond the borders of the USA. Nevertheless, if it had been carried out by the military with skill, and at a slow pace, it might have been achievable without capitulation.

Biden, however, was so anxious to get the USA out of Afghanistan, for vote winning purposes, that he acted against the advice of all his military advisors, and set an end exit date of this September, to align with the anniversary of 9/11 (again, for the purposes of vote winning imagery). The result is the calamity we seen now where surrendering Afghan military are being executed in the street and young women are being subjected to every manner of abuse, and where Afghanistan will once again by the home of Islamic terrorism ready to be exported abroad with deadly effect.

Biden's legacy of fatal and utter incompetence is assured.

They'll think again at the next terrorist atrocity on USA soil or attack on a US embassy, and it's discovered it was orchestrated out of Afghanistan. Most American politicians know that, which is why Biden is getting zero support from his Democratic Party on this.

"Might" is the key (and honest) word. I agree with your post but also sadly think this was still likely to happen even had the withdrawal been better managed. What a tremendously sad situation.

It just seems to me that if the US had maintained air support for the Afghan military, even with reduced numbers of personnel, it would have kept the Taliban in check. Biden has cut and run, which is why he won't be forgiven.

What would they do if it’s discovered to be orchestrated out of Saudi Arabia ?

Highly doubtful it would be the Saudi government. Bin Laden was a Saudi dissident and and banished from the kingdom. So the answer is presumably, the US would work with the Saudi's to eradicate terrorist cells over there

But it could of course be orchestrated by one of the many Saudi princes connected in some way, shape of form to the Saudi regime…..I’m guessing then it might be swept under the carpet…..but of course non of this has happened yet so we are only presuming

Yes, the Khashoggi murder was swept under the carpet by Trump (disgracefully) to keep the kingdom on side for the US. But then, that was apparently in US best interests.

For me there was a complete inevitability about this. The idea that the West would ever be able to train up a national army when there is no such thing as an Afghan nation and safely leave it to them was flawed from the start. But then when you invade a country with only one headline goal - to capture and or/kill Bin Laden and his team but can't really be arsed to plan for the rebuilding afterwards it's always doomed for disaster. Now for the cries of something has to be done to protect those who helped us. 'Fine as long as they don't want to come to the West. At least not my country.' Iraq, Libya. Plenty of precedent for short sighted foreign policy.

Really sad and scary scenes at Kabul airport, where no one seems to be in control at all.

Respect for Ben Wallace, another ex soldier, who clearly takes this fiasco very personally and has the courage to admit that some people, people with the right to escape here, will be ‘left behind’ and to say ‘what the west has done is……very sad’.

A few days ago he said that we could send 10,000 troops into Afghanistan if needed. I think he’ll be resigning soon.

US actively considering abandoning its Afghan allies and only evacuating US citizens. Out of control.

Was gonna say the same…seems eerily reminiscent of the scenes on the abandonment of Saigon.
Seems just as bad being a friend of the ‘good ol’ US of A’ than that being an enemy.

They will never change their modus operandi.
If the likely outcome is very good, they'll help you. Otherwise, no chance.

Our SF are at the airport supporting our Paras.
    Hope all get out safe.

Like Obama before him……certain elements were so sure he was the hope for a new era but sadly it’s just the same old, same old.

The irony isn’t lost that the great enemy, the followers of Mullah Omar, were once backed by the USA, like the Mujahadeen before them when they were engaged in a war the USA believes was right.
They seem to create a lot of problems that later befall them.
