Asked whether he is excited about the potential of his new squad, O’Neill says he is refusing to get carried away. He admits there were other targets that he would have liked to have signed but talks of his “delight” at managing to add some attacking edge to his team. “I think I am delighted by the players we have brought in to this football club,” he said. “It would have been nice to have the squad size up to scratch, I am not complaining because other teams are in a similar situation. “There’s a long time between now and January. If our major players stay fit then I will be delighted.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wonder who these players were and looking at our squad and bench over the first 3games I would say we don't have a game changer on the bench who could play in an advanced midfield role. Very happy with our squad but I think from reading that above that there could well be 1 or 2 coming in in the next transfer market, I know its a long way off but we are desperate for a top class central midfielder and maybe that Strinic mush could be back on the radar. As for now as MoN says if we keep the main players like Fletcher, Johnson, Cattermole and Sessegnon fit I am sure we will be fine, we need that win very soon though as its now 11 or 12 games since we last won in the league.
I think once AJ's back Sess will be a different proposition. If they click and start firing on all cylinders would we actually need anybody else in midfield. We have a AJ, Sess & Catts virtually guaranteed their places. JC is superb at the back or midfield, Seb, Gardner, Meyler & Vaughan are all decent squad players and can come in and do a job. Think another right back and another forward would do me in January. PS. Ronaldo has tax issues, might be tempted for a new challenge.
I think we were in the market for another quality striker, another more controlling central midfielder and a full back or 2. No names but Dempsey was certainly a target and its back to the drawing board on that one; this Croatian lad may still be on the radar and maybe a Tom Huddlestone style of player. We shall see in January I guess.
We are definitely a work in progress, MON is building his team. In my opinion we are still a striker short, a cm and full backs.
agree with this and think this will be sorted in the next two transfer windows think Rose was the back up option to Strinic and I wouldn't be surprised if we go back in for him if Dnipro are out of Europe come January, we need a quality RB as well, Bardo needs competition said it before and will say it again, need a central midfielder to set the tempo and drag us forward, Pirlo against England is the perfect example, maybe in the English League and us as a team we need someone who can mix it abit and be the player who is the box to box player and can drag us forward and get us over the line when we are dominating, Moussa Sissikho at Toulouse would be fantastic for us even if it cost us 10m, that sort of player is what we desperately need Cannot see Campbell getting a new contract so would agree with the striker as well
Not sure our priority should be more full backs, it has been obvious for a long time that we need a midfield player who can retain possession and make a decent pass. After watching the first three games this season, it seems more needed than ever.
