Hopefully we can get at least 9 points out of the next 12 available. I have us down for 28 points there which would give us 70 and hopefully a top 4 spot, but I don't think we should just be aiming for top 4, there is no reason we cannot go for the title this season, we have been as good as anyone.
The "6 pointer" spread is similar to last season, and again nothing like that horrible block of 9 games in 2011-12 (where things imploded) I have a good feeling about the squad, and the resolve (today especially) . See if there are newcomers, hopefully get 3 months from the likes of Pritchard etc, and even with the PL/Europa/FA fronts, we could be pleasantly surprised come May.
April is likely make or break....... Some tricky ones in there! I actually have us down for a best case scenario potential 33/34 points from here on in. Think we'll need most of those for a top 4 spot
we really needed to turn up in that second half and we did. That was the first time i watched Spurs and thought, these guys want it! it feels surreal to be entertaining such thoughts, i know this team has got heart the way they threw the kitchen sink at Palace as soon as the 2nd half kicked off. shhhhhh
I think it's handy to have this quick reference to our next fixtures on the board. I hesitate to express what I really think on our league finish and position because I think it's actually best left unsaid at this stage. So I wont express it
As we will need at least 4 away wins, I was pondering where those will come from, given that 5 of those games are difficult enough already and two more will be against sides fighting to avoid the drop.
Being realistic I'd say we can reach 70 points and that should be enough for 4th. We will drop points but this season everyone is dropping points unexpectedly.
My biggest hope is we finish with 73 points - our current record is the 72 points we finished 2012-13 with, and that was followed by Los Ladrones do Madrid tapping up Bale, Baldini going mental with the chequebook and AVB running out of managerial talent within three months of the season starting, so there would be a certain poetry in surpassing that. Of course, this means getting 31 points from the 45 available until the end of the season, and looking at the fixture list calling that a "big ask" feels like an understatement.
Anyone know what we would finish with if we repeat the same results against these teams as we got from them earlier this season?
It's all too speculative right now. If games were won on paper and past results, we would all be millionaires and Vernon and Littlewoods would never have made a penny.
By matching last seasons scores (with the swap for promoted/relegated sides), we'll get 28 more points (out of max 45). Seems about right/slightly disappointing. 70 points - would that get top 4? Be close I reckon.
In normal seasons it hasn't been enough, but this season... Last season after 23 games And at the end Season before after 23 games And at the end
Cheers for those SD. It really is fascinating because as much as we've gone on about how unpredictable this season has been, the table really does more or less balance itself out across the board. If you ignore the team names, the point margins compared to last season look pretty similar. I find it interesting that 10 points separated 10th from 4th on both occasions after 23 games, with identical points (42 v 32) and almost identical GD (+20,+22 and -2,+1). The relegation triumvirate also have pretty similar points totals and GD's across both years. The only glaring discrepancy as far as I can tell is the direct Chelsea v Leicester comparison at this stage of the season, Chelsea being 6 points and double the GD better off than this year's table toppers.
So hard to predict how we'll fare in the remaining games, teams are just beating everyone at the moment so while on paper you'd think we can get 3 points from many, I just won't bank on it. It'll be sods law we'll lose at home to Watford then go to City and get a result, and then at the end of the season rue the points we should've picked up while also reminiscing on some of the fantastic results we got in games we weren't expected to do so. I'm really enjoying the league now, while Chelsea and City (plus Utd) have immense financial power, bottom half sides are now able to attract/ produce players of very high calibres that'd be worth £15m-£20m upwards and it's created a much more competitive league. The likes of Vardy, Mahrez, Ighalo, Wijnaldum, Ayew, Arnautovic, Payet, Cabaye plus others are all with sides you'd associate as mid-to-bottom half of the table (Leicester obviously cruising right now) yet could well easily play for teams in the top 6.
