Did I hear somewhere that Steve McLaren speaks with a Dutch accent at his press conferences to appear more in touch with the locals?
You only need to spend a short time around a different language to pick the accents and colloquialisms . We also do it without noticing, it's a survival mechanism. We long to fit in, be welcomed into the pack. I was only living in Morriston for around 3 months and I started saying "Alright Mush", damn them; instead of "Alright butt" When I first moved there people knew I was from Neath soon as I opened my mouth. On Joey Barton, he might have slightly exaggerated the accent in this interview, but I tell you he speaks to his team mates and peers like this. Anyway I like him, must be the only one, might be because I'm an angry bastard.
Actually I think it's a survival mechanism that's what my shrink says , fcuk him! please log in to view this image
I've got little time for Barton but I could see what he was trying to do. French people who speak fluent English still sound decidedly French - not unlike Barton did in fact. Perhaps he thought that those who could understand English would understand even better if he mimicked them. Certainly they would stand no chance if he reverted to his native accent. Perhaps it was his attempt at a little courtesy.
