Pulis brutality? Stoke boss Tony fears the sack after poor run leaves fans raging

Manager knows that even a strong finish to the season might not be enough to save him with complaints over team's style of play adding to his woes.

Tony Pulis is facing a huge battle to keep his job as Stoke City boss.

Pulis has been stung by criticism from Stoke fans after poor results left them hovering dangerously above the relegation battle.

The Stoke manager, 55, fears he could be facing the same fate as Brian McDermott, who lost his job at Reading.

Pulis is worried that even a strong finish to the season may not be enough to secure his long-term future at the Britannia with the supporters having doubts which are a major concern to the club's hierarchy.

Stoke have backed him publicly but Pulis was left frustrated in January as he wanted to shake-up his squad but could not do the business he felt was needed to push the club forward.

He was prepared to let Peter Crouch go to bring in Darren Bent while he also wanted Blackpool's Tom Ince but could not pull off either deal.

Recent deals have not all been successful and Stoke's move for Charlie Adam last summer has not worked out and they may be prepared to cut their losses on the ex-Liverpool midfielder.

Pulis's recent record, transfers and the fans turning - the biggest complaint being the style of play - has left him in danger. There has even been a "Pulis Out" banner and the country's fourth longest serving manager is under genuine threat.

The manager has received backing publicly from Stoke chairman Peter Coates and it is understood the pair still have a good working relationship and there have been meetings to try and resolve the bad run.

But it still seems unthinkable to most of the country that Pulis - who has established Stoke in the Premier League - could be under threat when the club were relegation favourites when he first took them up.

It may seem unthinkable, remarkable - almost outrageous - but towards the end of Stoke’s defeat at home to West Ham last Saturday, a small “Pulis Out” banner was unfurled by a section of home fans at the Britannia.

Without doubt, it would be harsh to say the least were the Welshman under any real pressure for his job and quite rightly, Potters chairman Peter Coates has come out in recent days to give full support to the manager that has taken Stoke from the depths of the Championship into the top half of the Premier League, an FA Cup final and European Football. Clearly, to even suggest that the 55-year-old could lose his job at the Britannia would border on lunacy.

However, Pulis will be more aware than anyone of the way Stoke’s season has gradually disintegrated from the high point of their victory over Liverpool in late December to the undoubted low that was their timid defeat against a West Ham side that had not won away from home in the league since November.

Nobody would dare to doubt Stoke’s fans, whose fanatical support has been vital to the team’s success in recent years, particularly their formidable home record, which still stands at only two league defeats this season despite the last reverse to the Hammers. They are as aware of where the club has come from and how grateful they should be for the way Pulis has revolutionised their club’s fortunes.

However, the sticking point for supporters is that now after five seasons as an established Premier League force that has never really looked likely to end in relegation, the time for simply being “grateful” to be in the big time has passed.

This is perhaps where Pulis, his staff and his players can be criticised. Often they can give off the impression that staying up is the be all and end all for the club. That is fine if you are a Wigan Athletic for example, with small crowds, little financial muscle to speak of, constantly in and around the relegation zone and always in danger of losing your best players to the leading lights.

However, to Pulis’ credit it must be said, Stoke are none of these things. Their crowds are formidable, packed-out almost every week at the Britannia. They retain the ability to spend big when required, as Pulis has shown with his purchases of the likes of Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios.

In addition, the Potters are never in any real relegation trouble and when was the last time a player was prised away from the Britannia? Indeed, Stoke have actually managed to hold on to many of their biggest assets thus far, such as Asmir Begovic, Ryan Shawcross and Matthew Etherington.

Simply, Pulis must begin to aim a little higher. Being grateful to stay in the Premier League, almost throwing away the possibility of results away from home with negative game plans and banking on their home form is beneath what Stoke City are now. If Pulis does not to come to terms with this, then we could conceivably see more “Pulis Out” banners at the Britannia in the near future.

Never saw the Pulis out banner??? did anyone else see this???

No. Nor should there be. Tony Pulis does not deserve that. Personally I would prefer it if Tony were to stay but change his tactics. We all know that his present tactics are not good enough and that we have players who could do a lot better with a change of tack.

So how about a banner saying “Change tack Tone"

Well informed article the 2nd one.

I didn't see the Pulis Out banner. I would be ashamed if it's true. We are better fans than that. We are NOT like Chelsea fans. As much as I've criticised Pulis, he doesn't deserve that.

    What exactly does Pulis deserve?
Considering yhe fact that 99% of the posters on here say that he treats the fans with contempt etc etc, I don't think that a little Pulis out banner would cause him any sleepless nights.

What IS needed.is a bloody great big banner saying the dame plus F Off up the Vale, plus the Boothen chanting something similar.

    Why be nice!

As Chairman Mai said,'revolution comes from the barrel of a gun' and 'the longest march starts with the first step'

OK - I will ask the question again.

    What exactly does Pulis deserve?

Only the sack, before anybody else says it

I'm actually gobsmacked that people are defending him, he has held Soke City football club back for the last three years, wasted millions of pounds, treated the fans with utter contempt and ruined players careers. Tony Pulis's interest in anything stops at the end of his own nose.

I was told by my mate who went the game that there were 2 Pulis out banners (only small ones to be fair) and hopefully this saturday there will be plenty more, and they should be able to show them when we pay £35 to watch the utter **** that he conjures up!!

He deserves some credit and respect for bringing us up and for the first 2 seasons at least.
Thanks for all the good times Tony, but now they are way too few and far between, so, no thanks.

Agreed Sandir BUT for the past 3 years he has not earned one iota of respect.

I did'nt see any banner/s but quite a few in the Boothen End we're shouting at Clueliss, me included.

He's fooked and he knows it. SIMPLY not good enough! Pulis out ASAP.
