Hello and welcome to the official Not606 match thread for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League encounter between Liverpool & West Bromwich Albion. The game is scheduled to be played at Anfield on Sunday 22nd of April 2012 at 4PM. The game isn’t scheduled to be shown on English T.V but streams are normally posted before and during the game.

    Preview

After Liverpool & West Brom picked up good results last weekend, the two sides meet hoping to gain some momentum and finish the season well. Liverpool come into this game on the back of a win against rivals Everton in the F.A Cup semi-final. Goals from Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll meant that Liverpool are in their second domestic cup final of the season. West Brom come into Sunday’s fixture on the back of a 1-0 win against relegation threatened Queens Park Rangers. Scottish midfielder Graham Dorrans got the only goal of the game to all but ensure West Brom another season in the Premier League.

With the season coming to end and both sides having seemingly nothing to play for, you could think that both Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson will have a tinker with the side and bring in some youth/fringe players. I don’t think so.

Liverpool have had a poor league season and sitting 8th in the league and out of the race for a Champions League spot wasn’t what anyone at Liverpool Football Club had in mind but a run of good form at the end of the season is vital in my opinion. With a F.A Cup final with Chelsea just over two weeks away, Kenny Dalglish and his Liverpool side will be looking to build up some momentum before the cup final and finish a poor league season with a decent points haul.

The strike force of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll will be key to Liverpool’s chances of picking up the three points on Sunday. Suarez is Liverpool’s top scorer with 14 goals this season in all competitions and is a key player for this current Liverpool side. After being rested for the Blackburn game and playing the full 90 in the cup semi-final, Suarez will be fully fit and hoping to be a thorn in a resolute West Brom defence.

Andy Carroll will also be a threat to Roy Hodgson’s side. Having scored winners in Liverpool’s last two games, the big striker will be full of confidence and hoping to score for the third game running. Carroll has improved a lot in recent weeks and will be hoping for another start up-front for Liverpool. The big man has already scored against West Brom this season when he got the second for Liverpool in a 2-0 win at the Hawthorns in October. Carroll was put through for that goal by his strike partner Suarez and if they are to start up-front together on Sunday, Kenny Dalglish and the Liverpool fans will be hoping for the same again!

Liverpool will be looking to address a pretty poor home record this season with just 5 Premier League wins recorded at Anfield this season. The lack of a cutting edge and the fact that the strikers couldn’t put the ball in the net was a big factor in the lack of wins at Anfield. However, there are small signs that the goalscoring issues are getting better with 6 goals in their past 3 games which have yielded two wins and a draw. With a West Brom defence which is pretty decent both at and away from the Hawthorns, Liverpool will need to take their chances.

Despite West Brom looking safe for another season, Roy Hodgson won’t let his players think they can take that early holiday. After picking up 47 points in last season’s campaign, the Baggies will be looking for an improvement on that figure to signify another season of progress. West Brom currently sit 13th in the table with 42 points but they are just 1 point off Martin O Neill’s Sunderland in 9th. If West Brom were to grab a top 10 finish at the end of the season, everyone at West Brom would consider it an excellent season.

The recent form has been good. Two wins from the last three and five from their last 10 have meant that West Brom had hit a good run of form at just the right time. A win over Chelsea in early March proves that the Baggies can step up and produce strong performances and results against teams battling for a European place.

West Brom do have injury concerns to key players which could mean a slightly changed side from the win over Q.P.R. Marc-Antoine Fortune is a doubt with a hamstring injury and other key players such as Somen Tchoyi, Paul Scharner & Steven Reid ruled out, Hodgson seems likely to shuffle his pack. Players like Keith Andrews are expected to be brought in the centre of the park.

Despite the loss of key players to injury such as the ones listed above, striker Peter Odemwingie is available and is one of West Brom’s key players and will be a big threat to the Liverpool backline. West Brom’s top scorer with 10 goals this season, his goals have been instrumental in keeping West Brom in mid-table security and his form hasn’t gone unnoticed with Premier League clubs such as Fulham apparently interested.

One of the sub plots to this game will be the return of Roy Hodgson for the first time since he was sacked by Liverpool in January 2011. Hodgson has already stated in his pre-match press conference that he expects a ‘hot’ reception from the Anfield crowd after his disappointing spell as the manager of Liverpool. His opposite number on Sunday, Kenny Dalglish, has spoken of the respect he has for Roy and the hope that Roy will be afforded a warm reception when he returns.

It will be interesting to see what sort of reception Roy does get.

    Nice thread again Chris. <cheers>

Score prediction: 0-3. Odemwinge with the first, and Roy to bring himself on at 75 minutes and get a late brace. Glancing header from a corner and a 'Roy of the Rovers' - obviously named after him when he was managing Blackburn - bicycle kick from the edge of the box.

On a (more) serious note, I think a 2-1 or a bore draw is likely. Never know though. Kenny might shake it up again like at Blackburn.

Well, following on from my last thread (shameless plug), I believe that the tactical shackles will be off us and we'll see a return to the fluid, passing game we saw at the end of last season with more emphasis on keeping the ball moving and on the ground. I'm going for a 3-0 win for 'pool.

i am betting on hodgson parking the bus here. he's the type of unambitious pattern of play merchant to just try that for 90mins. utterly pointless.... thats what his team is and should be come sunday evening

5th April he said that the surgery was a success and that everything is going to plan with the after care

So hopefully he will be ready for pre season so he can join the players we haven't half missed him in middle

In a way this is one of the most important games this season, to get a 3rd win on the bounce would be nice and show would an improvement against smaller teams. Don't think i could face the abuse at college if we lost to West Brom (coming from the West Midlands) and we can't finish the season 8th behind Everton- that would be embarrassing considering the money spent. However my confidence is not high so will go, Carroll with a goal in a 1-1 draw
