Hello and welcome to the official match thread for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League encounter between Queens Park Rangers & Liverpool. The game is scheduled to take place at Loftus Road on Sunday 30th December 2012 with a kick-off time of 4PM. Sky Sports One will be showing the game (Build-up begins at 3.30PM) & BBC Radio Five Live will have the radio rights to the game.

    Preview.

Queens Park Rangers welcome Liverpool to Loftus Road in what will be the final game of 2012 for both sides. Both clubs will be looking to end 2012 with a victory and give themselves some confidence going into 2013.

Q.P.R & Liverpool go into the game on the back of defeats and will be looking to bounce back and start collecting the three points both sides need. The home side, Queens Park Rangers, hosted West Bromwich Albion hoping to collect their second win of the season which would have moved them closer to safety.

However, goals from Chris Brunt & a Robert Green own goal meant that West Brom were in complete control. The ex-Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse gave Q.P.R hope with a goal in the 68th minute but they weren’t able to get another goal and fell to a 4th league defeat at Loftus Road.

The Q.P.R manager, Harry Redknapp, wasn’t too happy with West Brom’s second goal as it seemed clear that Green had been infringed by Marc-Antoine Fortuné which didn’t help Green in his efforts to clear the ball. However, you could also argue that Green could have done a bit better with the actual ball itself (Punching it out instead of trying to tip it over the bar) but it’s done now and that result condemned Q.P.R to a second consecutive defeat and leaves Q.P.R bottom and 6 points from safety.

The away side, Liverpool, also lost on Boxing Day. They were given a difficult tie away at Stoke City with Stoke unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season. Liverpool got off to the best possible start with a 2nd minute penalty from Steven Gerrard giving Liverpool the lead. However, Jonathan Walters made the most of a Martin Skrtel mistake to get Stoke back level in the 5th minute.

7 minutes later and Stoke were ahead. A simple corner was headed home by Kenwyne Jones and after 12 minutes, Liverpool had gone 1-0 and then found themselves 2-1 down. Another Jonathan Walters goal just after the second half began gave Liverpool a mountain to climb.

They couldn’t mount any sort of comeback and fell to a 3-1 defeat. It was a thoroughly disappointing result & performance from Liverpool and it shows that Liverpool continue to be consistently inconsistent.

So, both sides go into Sunday’s game with a defeat behind them and a pretty poor 2012 in terms of the league results.

    Liverpool haven’t fared much better.

So, I think I can say with a fair level of confidence that, league wise, both sets of fans will be happy to wave 2012 goodbye!

This game will bring back memories of last season’s encounter at Loftus Road. A spectacular scissor kick from Sebastian Coates put Liverpool ahead before Dirk Kuyt doubled Liverpool’s advantage. However, Q.P.R fought back and three goals in 13 minutes from Shaun Derry, Djibril Cisse & Jamie Mackie gave Q.P.R a massive win and it gave them the platform to survive. After the Liverpool result, Q.P.R went on to win all of the home games they had left (Beating Arsenal, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur & Stoke City) and those results effectively saved Q.P.R.

To get the result Harry Redknapp and his side needs, he’ll need more from the attacking players. They have scored just 16 times this season which is the second worst attacking record behind Aston Villa. (15 goals so far this season)

Their top scorer(s) this season are the ex-Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse, Bobby Zamora & Adel Taarabt. Zamora has a hip injury and is therefore unavailable which leaves Cisse & Taarabt as the attacking players who have scored a respectable amount this season and can play on Sunday.

Q.P.R chances on Sunday would seem to depend on Cisse & Taarabt and their performances. Both have the ability to win games but if both aren’t on their game, Q.P.R could struggle in an attacking sense.

Taarabt is one of those players who can amaze and infuriate you in the space of a couple of minutes. He can drift out of a game and make you wonder he was played in the first place but he can then produce a bit of magic that could win you a game.

His performance in Q.P.R’s only victory this season (2-1 victory over Fulham) falls in the second category. He got both goals and his second goal was an outstanding run and finish which prompted Harry Redknapp to call it ‘One of the all-time great performances’

High praise indeed and if he is on his game on Sunday, Q.P.R can get a positive result.

The away side, Liverpool, need a response from the Stoke game and Liverpool will be looking to Luis Suarez to lead the attack and provide the attacking impetus that Liverpool need to get a positive result.

Suarez has 14 goals in all competitions this season and 11 in the league and is Liverpool’s only fit & available senior striker. He has already matched his goalscoring record in the league from last season and when he is at the top of his game, he can be an absolute menace.

With Q.P.R’s defence not settled (The last 4 games have seen different defensive combinations used by Harry Redknapp) Suarez could see an opportunity to get at an unsettled defence.

Another player who seems likely to be involved is Raheem Sterling. The winger has played 27 times for Liverpool this season since making his first league start in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City in late August. He joined Liverpool from Q.P.R in 2010 after he spent seven years in Q.P.R’s youth system. The winger will be returning to Q.P.R for the first time since his move to Liverpool and he will be looking to return to the starting 11 and impress against his former club.

So, an important game to look forward to!

Which side will end 2012 on a positive note? Or will both sides end a disappointing 2012 with a draw?

  3. "They have won 11 league games in 2012 which is their worst record in a calendar year. Their previous worst was 14 in 2012 so even a win against Q.P.R will see them end on 12 league victories which is still an unwanted record."

Both records in 2012...? (second quote bubble)

PS...told you I do occasionally read them <ok>

That should say 2010. Well spotted and that's been changed.

I'm working off the Liverpool logo on the club website. (Top left-hand side)

Right, I think everything is alright now.

I look forward to someone to point out a spelling mistake or something like that now... <whistle>

Lost to West Brom, Spurs, United, Arsenal with draws to City, Everton and Chelsea.

You're not exactly flying against the teams above you this season. Whereas you beat Reading, Southampton, Wigan etc this season.

Those wins all came at home though.

December was supposed to be our run of good results that saw us shoot back into contention, we were almost there but well, not so much.

  20. I understand why us fans think we always do **** against the lesser sides but our five league wins this season have come from Norwich, West Ham, Southampton, Reading and Fulham. With all due respect, they're not exactly the cream-de-la-crem are they!!!

I think its all down to expectation. Bad things tend to stick more than the good. We expect to beat the lesser sides and when we don't (draw or loss) it hurts. Also, against the better sides we are pleased with a draw most of the time meaning its 2:1 vs 1:2! (loss/draw:win vs loss:draw/win)

I think we will lose against QPR but its a gut feeling coupled with 'Arry and their situation.
