Forum is spot on as far as I'm concerned. It's a platform for people to post tips opinions and general thoughts. Certain people get over sensitive, certain people cause trouble for no other reason than to do just that but I'd say overall the tips are top rate and the banter is good. So as long as the banter doesn't turn offensive (it has done on numerous occasions before) then in my humble opinion it's a pretty decent forum that's well moderated

I pretty much agree with Badger, there is nothing fundamentally wrong it just needs people to reign themselves in sometimes with regards provocative comments and sensitivities. My only other comment would be that it would be nice to see a few new posters coming along. I do not know what the answer is to provoking that however. It's astonishing sometimes that the daily thread can have 2000 views but no more than 15 - 20 different contributors. I am not sure why we have so few contributors as those who do come on sensibly always get received well. I wonder if it's a bit intimidating, a bit like a pub used by regulars.

How about a specific thread for new posters to come on and introduce themselves and tip us their nap for the day, and even offer a little feedback perhaps?

Before I got to your last para Blue, I was thinking how about a new thread just for Newbies. It is interesting though that we very often have more guest than members viewing the Daily Thread. Must say something about its reputation. Presumably some of those eventually decide to join up.

As regards intimidation, thinking back to the BBC606 days, I very rarely touched the Daily Thread because it felt very cliquey. This forum is less so but I suppose to some extent it must appear that way to newbies. It's only natural when a family atmosphere is built up. It is nice to see Newbies welcomed though.

I think your idea of a Newbies Thread might be a good one especially if a few established members could go on there and bring them into the fold so to speak.

    How about something like:

Welcome to the New Members Club Lounge

And a very warm welcome to new members. Here you can chat among yourselves and swap tips etc. A few established members will be on hand to answer any questions you have and to help you settle in. Of course you are very welcome to join in on any existing threads and/or start your own. So get chatting, get involved. We're happy to have you here.

You will find the Horse Racing Forum Welcome and Index by clicking here. This will provide you with direct links to various threads and useful sites and is where the Forum Rules can be found.

If you have other interests too we try to cater for those as well; see our "The Non Horse Racing Index" by clicking here

    Enjoy

    Looks good Ron.

I was also thinking we might get some basic rules of etiquette set down somewhere - not wanting to be overbearing, just some basics such as tolerance, respect for others and their views, no wumming etc. The kind of thing one expects from fellow human beings but which can sometimes be forgotten on a chat forum.

We do have them Oddy, in the Welcome thread. But maybe it could do with another update. Hope you and your princess enjoyed your anniversary dinner.

I think that looks good Ron and sends the message we are really open to new members.

Regarding the etiquette thing there really only needs be one rule followed which is always respond to the post and not the poster.

There is of course exception to this if it is understood between the two posters that this is how they spar with each other. There are obvious examples of this in that it's clearly ok for Stick and Bob or stick and Nass to call each other what they like because they seem to know each other and have established a rapport in which they now meet. The problem comes when someone wants a dig at the poster and there is not this established rapport and it is entirely to try and get a reaction, or put them down.

As I remarked to Attivo however, what goes on here is child's play compared to the old 606. I posted far less on there because it just was not nice at times. The issue was always the same in that people would push Arkle's buttons and then he would push theirs and all hell would break loose and the daily thread would get 300 posts and not one of the days runners mentioned. I think the aim of this Ron is just to nip it in the bud before it descends to the old 606, but in truth it's a really nice place in which these things happen rarely now. This is something for which you deserve much credit for.

I like Blues comments regarding new posters making contribution. I myself was reading the forum on a regular basis but not actually posting anything - more so due to being worried about the quality of the tips i was providing. However when there is big events on we tend to have the tipping competitions and that can be a very good icebreaker for newbies and general banter.

Im not on much during the week as i tend to work a general 9-5 but tend to always post at the weekends and during the big festivals.

Very true. I try to spot the difference. Usually it's fairly easy but sometimes it takes a few exchanges to be sure.

Exquisite Ron - I do like Japanese food, their use of sesame is magical. After finishing the main course we were contemplating ordering some tempura, but I could feel the sushi rice starting to grow inside my stomach and thought better of it. Good job I did because 20 minutes later I couldn't even have managed a "waffer theeen meeent". All washed down with lashings of Sauvignon Blanc (which was more reasonably priced than the saki). €90 the lot - magic.

Swanny has asked (no doubt tongue in cheek) why we don't have a posh lounge like the one the new members have. It's a good point though; many football forums have a bar/lounge where they can meet up for a drink or something to eat. Well, we could have one. There is no existing thread where it would logically fit so it would have to be a new thread. Not sure what we would call it, maybe the least contentious would be The Frankel Lounge. Any imaginative volunteers to take on the running (eg food menus, bar, promotions, jukebox etc)?
