Each year I try and work out the point of the Shergar cup and always fail. From a punting point of view it's an avoid at all cost's unless you want your jockey drawn from a hat and end up being some Girl from South Africa who is red hot in her own sphere and yet never seen grass. From a spectator point of view their big idea has never taken off as I have never heard anyone utter ' who is winning? Uk OR Rest of world?' Also from a spectator and TV point of view to put all the horse in two different colours and just slightly different hats was a rubbish idea. The Shergar cup is a case of emperors new clothes, it does not work, it's pointless and yet no one ever says it, let alone accepts it.
I think I would be happy to end up with "some Girl from South Africa who is red hot in her own sphere and yet never seen grass". Yes, yes I would.
This is a case of underestimating your own strengths and not understanding others. These events work perfectly well in other parts of the world where you have one or two good jockeys and the rest are decidedly poor and where they look up to UK racing (or the US etc.) . But quite honestly it does nothing to enhance UK racing. Someone has seen this work very well in other parts and thought what a good idea. Wrong!! I've been to one, and it was good. But it belonged there and not in the UK. Think they race on grass most of the time in the Rainbow nation.
I used I have one but it kept getting hacked and has loads of American rap followers so shut it down lol but still like to keep an eye on it
Bit uninspiring the racing tomorrow. I don't mind the Shergar cup, it is what it is, but not really a meeting to bet to much on for me. What i'm going to try and do, as the placepot will surely pay loads given the nature of the races, is pick my selections purely based on the jockeys rather than the horses for small stakes and see how i get on. Anyone know if there is a rule 4 when the reserves get taken out of the betting? Away from Ascot i've took the 6/1 on Educate in the 2:55 Haydock. Hoping Roto is along later to say its his nap!
Saturday Pricewise >Ascot 205 Bantam, 315 Swivel, Shergar Cup 1255 Jimmy Fortune >Haydock 220 Salutation + Lahaag, 255 Educate.
4.45 Newmarket - Maverick Wave 6/4 Wouldn't be surprise if this price diss appears tomorrow morning. Is some talented horse and his rating will quickly go up and be running in a lot tougher races by he end of the summer! He proved this when winning lto at lingfield with lots in hand not only that he was heavily backed as if he should win with lots in hand too . Only slight concern is the bounce factor after that run as was his 1st run in 11 months but he is thought of a lot in the stable and is a quality horse
3.25 Newmarket - Alutiq - 33/1 ew Maybe going bit mad putting her up ad even worst with having her in my tracker with a note will win finally against her own! but especially as the stable will surely be aiming toward Lightning Thunder winning tis. But she is obviously thought in high regard was declare for the. 1000 Guineas but got pulled out has run in graded races this season too. Has struggled since winning last year but amongst her own sex she has a chance. Am hoping that the new stable factor will have an effect and at this price am willing to take a small ew gamble
8.00 Kilbeggan - Quarton - 10/3 Ran very credible 3rd a few weeks ago but was given a poor ride leaving too much to do. Now tried over fences and is 9lb lower than his hurdles mark whih gives him a massive chance for a horse that is obviously going well and so very unexposed over fences
Evening All Off to Sunny Exeter tomorrow to see Pompey start their promotion winning campaign (hopefully) with a win, so thought I would put up one I like at Haydock tomorrow. 2.55 Haydock - Hillstar 7/2 has filled the runners up spot on it's last 3 outings but did win a Group 2 at Ascot last year. Cavalryman put a good mark on the latest run when winning the Goodwood Cup last time out. Cheers Trevez
It is pretty awful stuff for a Saturday in high summer with a couple of G3's the highlight. Having said that they are very interesting pattern events. The Rose of Lancaster looks a cracker and the Fillies event at HQ will be informative. The effect of the forecast weather will be even more informative come tomorrow.
My old fav Educate 6/1 runs in the 2.55 Haydock tomorrow and I see Pricewise has put him up for the 4th time tomorrow - he seems to like him nearly as much as me! Thought it was a cracking run in the John Smith's Cup last time under top weight and if building on that I think he'll go very close. His best handicap form certainly gives him a cracking each way shout in this and if they run this at a nice enough clip I think he'll go very close. Definitely deserves a Group win to his name.
I have a big fancy for one at Ascot tomorrow and as I am satjust down the road from the course and it has been raining since around 5pm my confidence is even greater now. Ascot 1.30 Earth Amber 9-1 EW This horse ran a very good race behind a very progressive horse at the course on his last run, a repeat of that performance would see him take this in my opinion. The other things going for her are the ground as she will have no problems where as some will not enjoy what will likely be proper soft ground by the morning. The horse has also drawn a UK jockey in Hayley Turner, miss Turner is in my opinion not riding to the standard she was a couple of years ago but she will still have an advantage over some of the overseas jockeys, especially as it's only the second race on the card. I would advise ew at the 9-1 with William Hills as I cannot see her out of the first three but I fully expect this one to win.
