Ok, so club legend Terry Paine is the latest addition to the team, it's now time to choose your left midfielder. As always if you come up with an alternative name to the list, then name him in the thread and I will count them all at the end. Here is the team so far.. please log in to view this image
I know he'll be overtaken by some of our later players, but I've got to vote for John Sydenham. Lightning quick and a great crosser.
I looked at that list first thing and wondered how we'd managed to accrue such a lot of strong players on that side. I'm going to go for David Armstrong, but it could be John, Jay, Twat, Rod, etc... I have a feeling that by the end of next season it will be Sadio, by a clear margin. David Armstrong was such a great player. Calm, clever, skillful. A superb passer and crosser of the ball and his positional sense was fantastic [Keegan disallowed goal aside]. He would seem to pop up anywhere he was needed and linked the play beautifully. I don't think it is any coincidence at all that his time with Saints was during the Club's most successful league time before now.
Agreed TSS, Spike was one of the most underrated midfielders this country has ever produced, he was integral to our success in the 80s. He also got more than his share of goals too.
It really pains me, but Twatbeard is the best of the lot (at least for us, in my lifetime!!). Mane might pip him in a year or 2 though!
The more I think about this, the more you need to move MLT out of CM and play 4-2-4. Also, can Channon play wide left for this team please? Finally, no Neil McCann *smirks* Has to be Wobbly Armstrong.
It really worries me that the weighting on here towards the younger generation will end up the Twatbeard in this side. No doubt he was an excellent player for us, but he has no competition for the younger voters. The more experienced voters have a few to split the vote. shame.
You and TSS have convinced me FLT, I'm changing my vote to Armstrong, another legend. #keeptwatbeardout
Still think you need to shift Matt to a free forward role to accommodate your central midfielders. Or perhaps you are going to a 4,3 3.
For me it was a choice between Armstrong and the vastly under-rated Nicky Holmes!! Chose Armstrong in the end!!
Firstly 442 has been the standard almost universal formation for the past 50 years (until recently) and the one that most of the players chosen would've played I guess. Matt very rarely played in the front two and usually was just behind the front pair Shearer-Dowie, Shipperley-Watson and Ostenstad- K Davies. His own website describes himself as an Attacking Midfielder. If he plays up front, that means that many legends ie Keegan, Ron Davies, Lambert etc will miss out as there will only be one slot to choose for. People all have different opinions, but as i'm the originator of the concept, I guess I have to have the final say.
Twatbeard is a wonderfully gifted footballer with close control unrivalled by any of the others on the list, but he did only accomplish one successful season in the top flight which puts a question mark on him in comparison to Armstrong I went with Rod Wallace because he was my first favourite player as a kid and as I was a kid I didn't look out too much for the flaws of players. All I remember is him and Matty tearing up defences in Nicholls you'll score 3, we'll score 4 team. I was devastated when he left(prob cried), but unlike our more recent departees he does have a league title winners medal in his back pocket
I think you're the sort of person FLT was talking about. Where's your sense of history? Didn't you know that Saints nearly won the double in 1983-84?
To be fair to the younger guys, it's hard to vote for someone they haven't seen play, or only a few clips. This is why a poll for this type of thing is difficult.
