No point carrying on about Jewell anymore as we all know (apart from a small minority) that he is a dead man walking. There will be few tears shed at his demise and it's all now about who we want to take over and who would be right for the job. There are a few out of work managers who all have a decent pedigree and know this Division and more importantly how to get out of it. If we do go down the experienced manager route, which to be honest is the only sensible option given the absolute mess we find ourselves in, then I would look no further than Mick McCarthy. He will not take any crap from Captain Calamity and he would get the rest of the deadwood out in a hearbeat. He has the contacts in the game and he would play an effective style which at the end of the day is what we are crying out for. No thrills but solid will do me as opposed to nicey, nicey and ultimately lose. This job now has become way too big for any of the up and coming managers like Karl Robinson etc.. The time has come for an SOS to an old campaigner who is pragmatic in his approach and who knows what it takes to get out of this league. Yes we thought we were getting that with Jewell but in McCarthy we will have a safe pair of hands. Your thoughts on who should be next?
could we just have continued the thread that asked exactly the same question last week? or the week before, or the week before or... (you get the idea)
I agree JWM, this job is far to big for an up and coming manager becuase of the situation. McCarthy would be good, but i believe Clegg won't take being told the truth so i reckon he will go for somebody like smegson!
Burley would be worth a shout if he's still sober! But then again it's probably never a good idea to go back to an old manager.
I'm not a big fan of Mick McCarthy, I don't think he fits the ethos of the club, there's no doubt he's a no no-nonsence manager and gets his teams working hard but he builds workman like teams with teams like Sunderland and Wolves and I don't think that would suit us!! If PJ is to be replaced (which I expect if we don't get any points against Charlton) we need someone to come in who fits the Ipswich ethos most importantly. I would've like to see a young up and coming manager from the lower leagues appointed but if this season is to turn out to be a relegation battle I'm not sure its would be the time to appoint a young manager. The most important one for me though is someone with the Ipswich ethos (it's what makes us special as a club and how we have acheived success in the past) and someone who will evolve the team we currently have rather than ripping it apart and completely changing it!!!
PTC do we have any identity anymore. When Jewell does go then all we can hope for is someone who can work miracles.
BFJ MkII is who we need! When Burley got fired and BFJ came in the majority of Town fans were aghast but I have to say that BFJ did an amazing job considering the resources he had and having to cope with administration. This is no time for a rookie and I don't really care what style of play we have so long as it win's us football matches! Pragmatism is the only game in Town and Mick McCarthy would make us hard to beat and more importantly instill that long lost combative quality.
If the rumours coming out of Saints are true, you could do a lot worse than Nigel Adkins, plays good football, not much in the way of resources at Scunny! Could be a good move!
When ME first came in I was prepared for us to loose our identity slightly, I thought this is just the way football is going and if we needed to compete we needed to loose it a bit, which we have done!! Then Keane came in and for me we completely lost our identity, it has returned slightly under Jewell I think but the fans have never really overly warmed to him partly due to I think a lack of empathy and patience to the club as a whole but also because of the results!! As for this we need a manager that all the fans unite behind (the last 3 have completely divided fans) and I think a young up and coming manager from the lower leagues or maybe this league would hopefully buy the manager some time and patience from the supporters!! No names really spring to my mind but I wouldn't be a the biggest fan of McCarthy or certainly not Megson. Most of the managers I like are in a job atm, Adkins, Mowbray, O'Driscoll, Jones, Clough, Holloway and at clubs who they certainly wouldn't come here over. I'm questioning Ferguson from Peterborough, I think he's done a good job there, I'm confident he would come here and he fits the profile of developing young hungry players and playing good football but I'm not sure we want a manager coming from a team on the slide!! Part of me would love to see Di Canio here but part of me thinks he could go the same way as Magilton, obviously has talent as a manager but will he upset to many people along the way!!!
Adkins would be ideal but he is currently at PL club who would be stupid to sack him!!! He showed that he can work on a small budget with Scunthorpe but then spend well on a larger budget, although he has been a little eratic in the past couple of windows throwing alot of money at players and perhaps trying to run before he can walk with the type of player!! Alot of the players were brought in by Pardew and I like the fact Adkins didn't come in and majorely add to it he evolved the team. So yes he would absolutely ideal, although I really can't see it happening!! Surely Southampton aren't that stupid and I can't see ME or Clegg being that clever!!!
Adkins and Mowbray are the only two managers I actually would love to see here. Neither of them likely. Tisdale at Exeter always seemed to be an able manager but Im not sure how they/ he has been doing recently.
We need a manager who is astute in the transfer market. Definitely not Burley (mistake to go back). My own pick (with managers available) would be McCarthy However, I notice (in this thread & previous threads) that certain posters have rose tinted spectacles concerning BFJ. He did work miracles when he had no transfer budget but when he was given money to spend, the 1st player he bought was Darren Currie - possibly the laziest player I've ever seen
I quite like Keith Hill, he always seems like a footballing guy and has done a good job at Rochdale and earned himself the job at Barnsley so one of the outsiders to be considered. As I've said (Probably too many times) O'Driscoll would be my personal favourite if there were no obstacles, really gutted we didn't get him instead of Jewell when we had the chance
Karl Robinson would show real ambition on the part of Evans. A journey man manager would mean another 18 months of the same sort of results before you sack him.
I think the idea of McCarthy smacks very much of a re run of the Jewell appointment, one of the reasons I haven't been as militant in calling for Jewell's head is the lack of a justifiable replacement who will really drive change forward. I'm not overly convinced by anyone already out of work and think it might be wise to wait for the managerial merry go round to commence then we may end up with an absolute corker like Adkins or Pearson etc.
Not sure that Robinson has done anything of note. Really cant see why everyone seems to like the guy so much
