With Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, sadly, about to leave us in the summer, the career of our other long term stalwart JT, cannot be far behind, particularly with the sort of injuries he is having to cope with. Captain Fantastic's retirement is a distinct possibility in the near future.
It was therefore very interesting to read an article in the paper this morning, saying that David Luiz is being groomed for the possible role! From a spectators view I've never thought of him, as taking things seriously enough to take on this role! Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be interested to hear others views!

Cech will probably get it short term, maybe Cahill or whoever you sign to replace JT after that?

I can see Luiz as captain and said it within his first few weeks with us. Perhaps not the shout your head off leader like JT but more of a leads by example type (Gerrard?)

One of them players that really tries to grab a game by the scruff of the neck when we are struggling - and will do so even more if he gets played in midfield more where I would now try him until the end of the season.

Other than that, Cahill is a good shout but needs to nail down that C.B position first. Cech is obvious but IMO a goal keeper should never be captain.

Luiz is the only option imo.

I'd prefer the next captain to be English. We need that spine. I think Cahill is the perfect like for like replacement for JT.

Though I'd tend to agree, Cahill just doesn't match up to Luiz when it comes down to determination.

Agreed our next Captain has to be English. Gary Cahill is the perfect replacement for JT. But for the mean time Petr Cech is wearing the armband.

Disagree. If you saw Luiz's performances in the league he looks so lax and lazy, Cahill isn't as gifted but works harder. you could see the disappointment etched on his face in Barcelona a few months back and in the CWC.

Cahill has the maturity, character and mental strength to handle the role of being Chelsea captain.

Tough call. Luiz has more drive and enthusiasm than anyone else, and is playing well. Captaincy may take the edge off his game. Cahill is a good call, and though his form is currently patchy, he might be a good long term choice. Cech should be ruled out simply because of where he plays, too far away.

Maybe a case of nominating 2 joint captains, or 2 vice captains and letting selection decide on the day.

i hate seeing a keeper be captain but at the moment take out terry and it has to be cech or lampard, no one else is any where near ready but i definitely think luiz could be a great choice in a couple of years if things go well for him.

I'm sorry, but I cannot agree on Luiz.

    I think he's a total liability.

Cahill will mature better than him.

    Here's one for you...Mata.

I sympathise with the idea that calls for an English captain and if thats the case we cant see beyond Cahill! He is not a JT though! Luiz demonstrates passion at times, but can be frivolous as well ! Have we ever had a non English captain?

PS SW6--Mata--brilliant player, loyal and committed, but I would say not a leader, in the Dennis Wise , John Terry, Terry Venables mode!

Cahill is just as defensively suspect as Luiz. If you want the most solid player then make Ivanovic captain.

I don't think Mata would cut it. Probably our best player, but I think it's too easy for for a player in Mata's role to get isolated in tougher games where we aren't allowed to dominate possession.

Varier, you and I must be the only 2 who think Cahill is as sus as Luiz, going by the flack Luiz gets. I think Luiz is a much better prospect for the future, and he could play further forward for sure. Cahill I think, will become a solid, reliable and steady defender, which is just what we and every other club would love to have. Luiz may go on to something more. We're very lucky to have both.

He'd be less of a liability in Midfield where I think he'd become a truely great player for us.
