According to the Daily Mail today, Wayne Rooney is the 'New Pele', those of us old enough to remember the great man, (Pele that is) discuss! Those not old enough join in anyway.

Really ,truly great players not only command respect but IMO show humility as well.

Wayne Rooney at his best would not even get in my top 20 UK players.

To compare him with Charlton,Moore,Best,Law.Charles,Greaves,Blanchflower,Matthews,Haynes etc etc
let alone World players like Pele,Beckenbaur, di Stifano,Messi,Ronaldo,Cruyff is a joke.

Rooney is nothing compared to these players.

I agree with Yarco - he wouldn't make it into Manure's best ever side let alone comaring him to Pele - United's best front three in my living memory would be Law, Charlton and Best with Cantona and even Van Nistelrooy ahead of Rooney.

You can't adequately compare players from different era's either as the conditions are so different and the game is so much faster now. Rooney is the best we have at the moment so lets keep it at that! <ok>

well i never saw pele but i did see maradona, zidane, fat ronaldo and messi and to compare rooney to any of those four is laughable. i cringe when i hear him described as 'world class'. he's not even the best english footballer of the past ten years in my opinion... i'd have ashley cole, steven gerrard and even frank lampard higher than him. he's potentially better though.

but then, it is in the daily mail <doh>

Shearer has to be the best England striker over the last 20 years for a start!

In my youth you would have hung The Daily Mail on the Bog Door.

    That's all it's good for.

Can't recall Pele being caught up in too many prostitute related scandals although if Rooney continues Granny-shagging then maybe he could be in need of the blue pills promoted by Pele?

Seriously to compare the two is laughable - one has won three world cups and was an integral part of possilbly the greatest national team ever. The other is Wayne Rooney. Good player and the best England currently have but IMO certainly not the best English player of my lifetime.

What, no Shaun Wright-Phillips or Stuart 'less assists than a corner flag' Downing!

i think you may be pushing it with gascoigne in the past 15 years! if we can stretch it back to the past 20 years then yes, and then i can have chris waddle in there too!! :D

Absolutely agree about having Waddle (penalty miss aside!) I was more thinking from Euro 96 onwards and although you can argue that Adams was getting on a bit he is still much better than Terry! Gazza still had that touch of class and he could still turn the game with a bit of genius. Rooney wouldn't even be on my bench!

I would swap Ferdinand for Terry and Gazza for Scholes. if we are talking about the last 15 years.

I cannot agree more. I was going to say I hope Rooney is more successful than he was at the World Cup but I feel that I should be expecting more than a couple of accurate passes....
