Do you think as fans we get hung up too much on the idea of a 20 goal a season striker? Statistics from the Premier League era are quite interesting: http://hitrowz.com/2013/07/14/the-myth-of-the-20-goal-a-season-forward/
Very good article - left this comment: "That's very interesting. Amazing to see all those names with 1s next to their names. have to admit that I had to go and check your Ronaldo stat (scored 20 goals once in the EPL). Good article." Really does go to show that even the absolute best-ever Prem strikers rarely get 20 goals in their entire EPL career! Andy Johnson is in some damn good company on that list. Mind you, even Kevin Philips seems like a Premiership legend comparatively. (Probably the biggest difference between the two was injuries come to think of it).
15 would be nice. A 1-in-2 striker would be spectacular. But that would only yield 19 league goals. There is nothing magical about 20 but we do need someone to stick the ball in the net. We created as many chances as Arsenal last season i'd say, look at the goals scored column.
The first year I really started being properly into football and paying attention to all the results and tables etc was the year after Clive Allen got 49 goals. I just couldn't believe reading my Panini sticker album seeing all these club top scorers who got 12 or 15 goals. What the hell were they doing? What was everyone else doing that made this guy top scorer? Sort of distorted my view of striker stats for a few years, that. Twenty a season always seemed a highly reasonable amount.
You have not done the full stattery. When you look at the correlation between the teams that have a 20+ PL goals per season striker, and their PL placings that season, you understand the reality. They near guarantee a PL top 3 placing. Only the Goons (surprise, surprise) have repeatedly failed to keep to the pattern.
I thought Lampard had done it more than once, but I'm surprised that him, Bale and Ronaldo are the only three non-strikers to make the list. 8 current or ex-Spurs players on there, but I'm sure that a lot of them weren't achieved wearing our colours.
He did get 17 goals and 11 assists in the season before last, so it's not like he was miles off. No Rasiak.
Ferdinand - 2 at QPR and 1 at Toon Sheringham - that was us 92/93 Klinsmann - Us of course Saha - Fulham Ade - THAT lot Bent - Sunderland Berbatov - Utd Bale - us
The other thing about these stats is that players rotate a lot more now. When Teddy and Jurgen did it for us they not only had more actual prem games but they played all or nearly all of them. Nowadays you might play 30 full games which makes 20 goals a 2 in 3 ratio.
Jimmy Greaves done it most season's for us,his goalscoring record really is fantastic, even though he is pre-premiership days
Yeah - I can only dream of seeing a striker like that for Spurs. I've seen some very, very decent ones but none like him I don't think. For me he's the bloke who sat next to Saint every Saturday morning.
yeah, guess i was one of the people lucky enough to see him,in his playing day's if he had a sniff of a goal,he was lightning quick, probaby faster than Bolt!!
So we're one of only three teams who've currently got two of these 20 goals a season men. Yet we still complain that we need new strikers
same for any transfer. If it was a science there wouldn't be any flops. Personally, despite being VERY angry at Ade most of last season, i think we should keep him as on his day he is a top player. But i would want another striker too. I am very greedy though
