Sure some are gonna say 73 final. Aye cos we won. But what about 18 years ago today. We didnt win, but bloody hell. Clive Mendinca (sunderland lad) scored 3 against us. Mickey Gray (sunderland lad) missing the 14th and deciding penalty. 4-4 after extra time. Losing 7-6 on penalties. Charlton got promoted. Surely this one is gonna take some beating. Ps. Can anyone remember why skp never took a penalty?
I thought the 2nd leg of the play off semi final against Sheffield Utd was pretty special and very exciting. The atmosphere in the ground that night was awesome
Tuesday 13 Nov 1973 3-0 win at Roker Park against Bolton Wanderers. My first ever game and it started my love affair with the club.
The most exciting end to end game I've seen was against Man Utd away in 1974, we got beat 3-2 but it was a tremendous game. The play off semi-final against Sheffield Utd was the best atmosphere so far in the SOL for me.
Good first post mate Just been reading about the Man U game. Sounds a corker. Over 60k there for a div2 game. McIlroy got the winner. Man U got promoted that season.
The Chelsea game this season is the best I've seen for ages. It was a thriller and a kick in the nuts for the mags too.
I was at that game. When I think about that game I'll always remember listening to a phone in on the car radio on the way to the ground. We had lost the first leg at their place, I seem to recall, and a SAFC supporter had rang in complaining about the fact that we had finished well ahead of Sheff Utd in the league and it wasn't fair that we had to play them on a level playing field. We should have some sort of advantage! His suggestion was that for every point we had finished ahead of them should count as a goal head start. When pointed out to him that this meant that we would then have something like a 17 goal head start before a ball would even be kicked he was still adamant that it was a good idea.
There was a Sunderland match on football gold on Sky Sports last night. Sunderland 1 v 2 Man United. Double from Januzaj, I enjoyed that one.
There was a game a few years ago which had everything. Local boy returning to manage his troops against his home town club, two struggling teams looking for points to kickstart the season. First half tension fades away as a captain bags a hat-trick and then just at the end the Sunderland hero of the day steams in to get a goal and rescue blushes by keeping the score at 5-1. Classic tension. Seriously though, I though the Man Utd league cup semi a couple of years back was your most exciting game recently. Tight game, penalties and the relief of it all amidst an otherwise fairly painful season.
Boo hiss.. Laugh my cock of is Rafa ****s off and he ends up as your new manager. Ps. **** of Kevin Nolan.
