Sh*te source. But if this is true then surely all those arguing that the club actually had a plan in this appointment process now have to concede that our owners have no clue what they're doing. They've bumbled between two very low key managers, not that reputation is necessarily a problem, but it is a consideration when signing players.

All this proves is that Rodgers was only appointed because he'll play up to our owners ridiculous fantasy of applying baseball logic, a stop start process sport where virtually every aspect is empirically measurable, to football one of the most fluid sports in the world. He was never going to be part of some huge scheme involving Van Gaal and a decent size budget.

I'd be prepared for a bit of a hissy fit backlash from the media who have been made a bit of a fool over this appointment.

Personally I'm surprised they haven't concentrated on the line that Rodgers wasn't first choice & only picked when Martinez said no. I'm sure someone will do it.

Either way, let's not undermine anything before its begun.

That article does not sound realistic at all to me. I would trust it or let it influence your opinions.

He will definitely have more than £25 mill to spend.

Also remember this. The owners have a unique vision for how the club will be run, that is nothing like any other club.

We will just have to wait and see.

Rodgers was always their prefered candidate after Klopp, from what I heard. Rodgers wasn't appointed because Martinez said no.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't get a DoF though...

Wasn't saying it was anymore true than the article, just surprised they didn't do it.

And that's the point; the media are the ones that named 20 candidates with an air of authority only to get it wrong or be 3 days too late.

    Feck them.

Sounds bollox, if the reason Martinez walked away was the DoF, why would they then settle on their second choice, and sacrifice the DoF concept. If they were going to drop the idea, then surely they would go back and get Martinez...

Rodgers was always their prefered choice (after Klopp). Martinez was the backup choice.

I'll believe it when I hear it.....

my opinion, for the record, is that Rodgers on his own is a mistake; we've seen how the current England manager, no less, couldn't cope with the level of expectation. I like Rodgers but we need experience as well as talent. Rodgers with a DoF (Rafa, VG...) would of been perfect imo; apparently he's a coach more than a club manager and I think this structure would of fit him well.

I have supported FSG all along (didn't agree with Kenny going but their club, their choice tbh) saying that they'd have a vision, a plan, but if this does turn out to be true, I tend to agree with the OP in that they had less of a plan more a couple of ideas! Meh, who knows!

Out of interest what's your source for this? I thought Martinez was the first choice.

Would appointing Van Gaal help or hinder Rodgers? I hear a lot of stories that Van Gaal is a bit of a control freak so he may stop Rodgers from implementing his plans and methods.

I know Van Gaal is big name and will bring much needed experience to the management team but I keep hearing more negative stories. For Rodgers to be able to succeed for a long time at LFC, he needs to implement his own ideas and philosophies without restriction ffrom the management and I get the feeling that Van Gaal may keep interrupting?

Perhaps Txiki is a better option?

Doubt it would get any credibility here, but I knew a few people who know some first team players. There's always rumours and whispers going around the squad and the big one in the last few weeks was that Klopp was the number one target if he could be pursuaded to leave Dortmund. Failing that, they wanted Rodgers. No idea if Martinez was third, but he was certainly sounded out and interviewed incase other options fell through. Rodger's comments last week were about him declining the option of an interview process, since he didn't want to be just a 'part' of the process and risk upsetting his position at Swansea by doing so. When he was approached a second time as being the main contender, he was interested - hence the turn around. The media picked up Martinez as the number one candidate because Whelan spilled all the information he could and that's all the journo's had, not a inkling about any other candidate, so they ran with it. Martinez was never offered the job, he was offered a further interview.

    That's about all I know...believe if you will :)
