A decent read for anybody that likes reading up on the club. I met both FF and FS in the past and one of them was a gentleman.

"The Man Who Made NUFC Into A Business and Gave Them Kevin Keegan" has been written by Norman Watson who is Chair of The Newcastle United Supporters' Trust and is online now.

The recent death of Freddie Fletcher saw the passing away of a colourful character who revolutionised the commercial side of Newcastle United.

I know there were issues with the Club when Freddie was in charge, particularly on the save-our-seats issue, but NUFC was beginning to realise its potential as a Club both at home and in Europe, and Freddie Fletcher played a major part in that.

Over the past few years the Trust had regular meetings with Freddie to get his views on how he thought football in general and the Club in particular should be run. We found him very keen to help and he gave us his ideas in a very friendly and open way. It was obvious that although born in Greenock, Newcastle United Football Club meant as much to him as any Toon fan.

He felt that the current model of football governance was in need of a big shake up and unlike most of the current FA hierarchy, he saw no reason why the supporters of the Club should at least have a say in how their Club was run.

I might add that when I was coming out of the ground after the Hartlepool friendly I asked somebody the directions to the railway station as I'd travelled to Hartlepool by coach. The guy I asked, asked me where I was going and when I said Newcastle he said, "We're going there, we'll give you a lift" and told his (Who I thought was his mate) chauffeur to drop me off almost on the doorstep. I tried to give him something for his kindness but he wouldn't hear of it and wished me well as they drove off.

I had no idea at all it that it was Mr Fletcher. A real gentleman in every sense of the word.

Despite the source, that DM article is worth the read. He sounded like an incredibly important part of NUFC and I'm glad I found out more about him, albeit in sad circumstances.

    RIP
