Have you ever thought about that magic something that makes some clubs successful and others just fall into an abyss of mediocrity? Clubs like the Sheffields are superbly supported and never seem to get the rewards that those supporters might feel they deserve. Others like the Hull in the sixties and currently Bristol City are backed by financial gurus; spend vast amounts of money; descend into large debt and achieve nothing more than failure. Do you feel the resposibility rests with the Clubâs Boards who offer so much support with their dedicated involvement and do their utmost to make the right decisions? Is it simply the failure of success of the playing management team? Is it down to the playing staff who are just not up to scratch? Or more importantly, as has affected both of the Bristol Clubs in recent years, is there a malaise about the clubs, where too many of the playerâs probably donât really give a toss about the shirt, as long as they receive their salary on time and in full? Then you get the unique situation of managerial genius. Alf Ramsay took pretty much a piddly little village side at Ipswich in 1955 from third division obscurity to win the First Division Championship in five years. He changed the tactics of football for ever and as England manager won the World cup in 1966. He bore no truck with the dilettante players whose names had previously gone up on the team sheet as a matter of routine. Players like Jimmy Greaves didnât come up to Ramseyâs requirements! Every team is looking for another manager like him. Is there one out there somewhere?
bit harsh on hull, they got to the prem before and look good for getting there again end of this season. but i get the point though i think its down to the manager. as long as the board backs the manager in every way then its down to the manager to bring in the right players for the right money, the right players who are winners and breed the winning mentality, players who are hungry and want to be at the club and will fight for the club and fight for their place. mildenhall, mcchrystal, o'toole and brunt all are in this mould and is the spine of the team. the manager must know before he brings in a player that he knows who to motivate the player and be able to get the best out of him. manager needs good man management. its all the manager for me
I was referring back to yesteryear for Hull when their sugardaddy was investing in them and they couldn't get past Div 2 Yo-yoing between the second and third tiers of English football, Hull City had promotion seasons from the third to the second division again in 1959 and 1966, winning the third division championship in that latter season. Still, however, top flight football eluded the club. In fact, by the early 1980s, Hull City were down in the fourth division, and financial collapse lead to receivership
