I came across a blog about why the English game needs luxury players and specifically our Berba. Here are the relevant bits - As a footnote it has been reported elsewhere that Manchester United are footing part of Berbaâs wages -
Thank you Manchester United. The mystery to me is what happened to make him fall out of favour with Sir Alex. I remember reading somewhere that, even though he was used quite sparingly last year, minute for minute he was still ManU's most productive goal scorer. So what made Alex give up on him? (Actually, that might be a good question to post on the ManU board. )
From what I gather he didn't fit their style of play. They were moving towards fast-moving, overlapping and interchanging forward play, and that's not really what Berbs is about.
Bidley's right, according to the feedback I got from the ManU site. They said he was too slow to fit their fast-break style, but ManU fans lauded his control and passing. He'd become 4th choice behind RVP, Rooney and Hernandez. So considering his wages, it was wise for ManU to send him packing, even if ManU had continue paying a portion of Berbatov's wages.
