Good Morning. It's Wednesday 7th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

    Will Leeds abandon Rowe bid

Norwich City are demanding a fee of £15m for promising winger Jonny Rowe, according to various sources in the press yesterday.

Leeds see Rowe as a natural replacement for Crysencio Summerville, who departed for West Ham earlier this week. They duly submitted an offer of £7m to test the waters, expecting some further wriggle room for negotiation, but would not have predicted they would have to double their bid to get their man.

Rowe had a successful breakthrough campaign last season, scoring 12 goals and providing 2 assists in 32 appearances. He has one year left on his contract, but believe Norwich have the option to add a further twelve months to his terms.

Summerville had an attitude problem - Popey

Speaking on his 'Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet' podcast, Adam Pope pulled no punches, deliberating over Crysencio Summerville's sudden ER exit!

The BBC sports journalist believes the club should have got more money for their star player, but admitted he thought the Dutchman had an attitude problem, which is why he 'wasn't unhappy' that he had left!

It's been well documented that his attitude was called into question during the infancy of his Leeds career, but had matured, especially after Wilfred Gnonto joined, who was seen as a calming influence on Summerville!

“It’s the one that at the beginning of the summer, which player is going to be leaving Leeds United?
Archie Gray you thought there good chance if the money came in, but Summerville was definitely either first or second on your list. It’s happened, did I think it would be West Ham? No. Did I think it would be £25million? He’s worth more.

“He’s definitely worth more than that, but there will be add-ons and what have you so it’s happened, it’s gone. Am I unhappy? No, because I think there was an attitude issue. But I think there’s a lot of goals to replace.”

This is my season - Joseph

Mateo Joseph has issued an ambitious statement to the rest of the Championship, ahead of their season opener against Portsmouth at the weekend.

All the hard work is starting to pay off for the hotshot 20yo, bagging four goals during pre-season including a brace against Hannover, and is now widely tipped to lead the line this season for the Whites, ahead of team-mate Patrick Bamford!

Working hard has only been part of the battle. He has shown maturity beyond his years, waiting patiently for minutes, but then nailing the opportunities when given the chance. Speaking to the Athletic, Joseph feels calm, but has trust in his ability and believes this will be his season to shine!

"Pre-season has been tough, it's been a lot of running but I like it because doing the training, I feel fit. It's tough, it's been hard but to be ready for the games we need to be like this.

"This is my season this year. I don't want to sound too confident but I can't wait to prove it and for the season to start. I did everything I could to train and improve, I see the improvement now. "When you do everything you can to take the opportunities, you have to feel calm about it and trust yourself because there's not anything else you can do.

"They told me I have to be patient (for first-team opportunities instead of being sent out on loan), I thought it was a really good choice because you never know what can happen when you go to another place. I'm really happy I stayed, was calm and was given the opportunity.

"I improved a lot during the season, you could see that as the games went on. We had a good team so it was difficult to get into it, but I made it my space and this year I'm going for more."

Latest on the Rowe kid is Leeds want him for less than £10m, the clubs are negotiating and Rowe only has a year left on his contract and will walk on a free next summer. Seems not many clubs are willing to pay the fee Norwich want. Should be resolved this week one way or the other and if Leeds find an alternative especially on loan Norwich are in bother.

Joseph should have been given more game time last season. I hope he gets his chance this season and if he does what we all hope he will have saved the club over £20m. There’s a reason he was so highly thought of at Espanyol and why the current Spain national manager says Joseph is the future of Spanish strikers.

Morning everyone two assists from Rowe is not exactly promising is it. For 15 million i would want better stats than that.

Morning all. Bit off topic but listened to a great podcast last night featuring the financial guy Kieran Maguire. Ive posted a link.
A few of the points made. Great explanation of psr and where Leeds stood. We don't have much to spend and there will need to be a similar round of sales next season to comply if we fail to get promoted. Our wages are a big issue. Went into depth re the new equivalent of per due to arrive in a year. Basically Man City have a turnover of 700m, they are allowed spend 70% of that, over 500m. Newcastles figures about half that so can spend basically half what city can. Scum have big turnover like Liverpool so suits them. Basically the pl will be faked as lots of teams spending can't cross 100m so the top six will remain as they are for ever more and teams being promoted have little to play for. Even villa have had to sell players despite qualifying for the cl. As for our red bull deal, it wont be clear if that will mean anything to the clubs coffers until next accounts are published. Basically if they bought into the 49ers consortium, it means nothing to the club but if there were extra shares issued that they bought then that money goes into the club kitty. He estimated the jersey sponsorship at 2m a year which is huge for the championship as discussed but a pittance compared to pl where mid table teams get 10m. He cited the example of Portsmouth, who we play this weekend. Their shirt sponsors are Portsmouth university and would be paying a pittance for that as universities don't have millions to throw around. A great listen I thought

Eire have been saying similar for years. Have posted on here plenty of times saying that everyone hates City as an example but because they and the other top 6 clubs were allowed to get away with shyt years ago they can now spend whatever they want. The last 4 seasons has seen City make a big profit on player sales when every other club loses and keeps losing. A profit of at least £70m on player sales every season from buying cheap and selling big. Right now for example Julian Alvarez bought for £14m being sold for £75m rising to £95m. Villa have tried to cook the books with swap deals with Juventus whereby both clubs vastly inflate player values to make their books look like they made huge profits. The whole thing is a joke and clubs are now forced to cheat to try and stay competitive.

Norwich have the option of extending his deal by 12 months so I don't think he can walk away next summer.

Heard him a few times on Talk Sport and other places. Tell me if I’m wrong but bet he mentioned the richest football club in the world, Newcastle who cannot compete with the top 6 because the damage has already been done with the top 6 and drawbridge pulled up. Was only a few years ago that Abramovitch bought the league and Man City did the same but not as fast until Mancini was bankrolled. Man Utd were always big revenue generators as were Liverpool….. there needs to be a big rethink. A club should be able to spend what the owners deem they can afford. Simple market economics but as it stands right now a few clubs were allowed to do that but then they stopped every other club who managed to get a rich owner from doing the same. Plenty of rich owners now in the UK, just like us but being held back

He is a year younger than Summerville.

He wasn't in a dominant side last year either.

15 million is too much. Anything around the 8 or 9 million would be good business.

Yep. That's exactly the gist of it. City basically are now untouchable and will be for the forseeable future

You’d think two assists were excellent if he’d passed the ball 20 times and it was Bamford on the end each time ;)

And the likes of scum, Liverpool, Arsenal etc weren’t happy about City breaking into their monopoly, which is why FFP/PSR rules were introduced. It was designed to protect the “elite” clubs and prevent upstart teams from getting in.

I know criticising players that have left is a pet hate of Eire and that is not my intention but, picking up on the comments from Adam Pope. Had a glance across at JA606 the other day and saw something interesting from ADRITK who, for those that don't know is their equivalent to Gessa, i.e. the poster with a little ITK information. He said there was a general feeling within the club that Summerville more or less downed tools for the last half a dozen games last season and 2 senior pros that weren't playing (didn't name them but guess Cooper & one from Bamford, Ayling or Dallas) were livid with his performance at Wembley. Don't normally get involved in the Gossip / Hearsay side of things but this guy is normally on the button when he posts something as fact :emoticon-0148-yes:

My only problem with these type of rumours is, if the player has downed tools, why would the manager keep picking him? Only thing for me which could suggest a bit of attitude was the penalty incident when he insisted on taking it instead of the nominated taker.

These rumours never surface though till after the player is gone and seldom paint said player in a good light. I wouldn't like to suggest for one minute there might be a bit of pr involved. Nah.no club would do that <whistle> Anyway there's lots of prima donnas in the modern game, doubt he was only one with an attitude problem

I think the end of last season showed that Rutter and Summerville in the same starting 11 was too much of a luxury, both great when they are on it but when they are not, it's like playing with 9 men. Starting with the same 11 this season was never going to be a satisfying option as the balance wasn't there and everyone complained about teams parking the bus against us.

I think the sales have been good, lots of fringe players and loans moved on, Gray is a huge talent and prospect but not what we need right now, he wasn't a great RB and he wasn't our best midfield player so if we can improve in both areas by selling one player then great business.

Of our attacking lineup, forget Bamford he is never going to attract a big money move, out of the rest I'm comfortable with it being Summerville, if not him then Gnonto even both if we can bring in the likes of the Palace lad or Rowe.

Summerville asked to leave when we had Bielsa, he was refused a move but he isn't seen as a rat.

There was something off with the way Summerville took the ball away from Piroe for the penalty, not just the way he did it, but the way he never at the time, or even afterwards had a friendly chat with Piroe.

He said he was happy to remain here but there was never any talk of him extending his contract, West Ham offered him 4yrs he demanded and got 5yrs, I don't think there is much doubt that he had a bit of an arrogance about him

I was a huge fan of his at the start of the season, I wouldn't mind him still being here, but I don't believe he will ever be a top PL player. As long as we use any funds wisely in replacing him and Kamara then I think we will be in for a special season
