Good Morning. It's Friday 9th September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road Premier League fixtures set to be postponed Premier League fixtures are set to be postposed this weekend following the sad passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Premier League officials were in talks with Downing Street last night to discuss the matter, with a decision expected this morning. If as expected, Monday's game against Nottingham Forest is called off, Leeds next match won't be until Sunday week (19th) at Old Trafford. Marsch targets Saltzburg forward Italian football media outlet Calcio Mercato are reporting that Leeds are interested in signing Red Bull Salzburg striker Noah Okafor, but face stiff competition from Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund. The versatile forward (22), and has eight caps for Switzerland (scoring twice). He has already netted five times this season for Saltzburg, attractive interest from around Europe. Unsurprisingly, Mercato worked under Marsch whilst head Coach of the Austrian Bundesliga outfit. Should he make the switch in January, the gaffer won't be the only familiar face. Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen both played alongside Okafor. please log in to view this image Leeds miss out on free agent Mata Out of contract midfielder Juan Mata has signed a one-year deal with Turkish outfit Galatasaray. The former Manchester Utd star was linked with a Summer move to Elland Road, after it was suggested that Victor Orta was in talks with the 34yo Although geographically suited, the bitter rivalry between the clubs always made a move across the Penines unlikely. Would you have liked to have seen Mata at Leeds? What difference would he have made to Marsch's squad? please log in to view this image
Morning all and sympathies to fellow English posters on death of your Queen. I know many of you will be affected. This cancelling of sport though, while fully understandable, is a double edged sword. Several of supporters group Im luckily a member of had tickets flights and hotel booked and paid for the forest game. That's a lot of cash down the drain. Maybe instead of milking fans dry, clubs might consider compensation of some kind in these cases. Might upset their balance sheets of course
A mate of mine was being brought over by his fellow Leeds Utd supporting brother as a surprise for his 60th. I guess that's down the pan.
Good morning, I'm not a royalist but the Queen seemed like a lovely lady. This is going to be a nightmare for the football league if fixtures are called off this weekend, the funeral will most likely be next weekend and then we have an international break. Unless there's some juggling done we might not play a game until October and have a little over a month to play before we stop again for the World Cup.
Morning all Football I don’t believe we were in for Mata myself. Mercato I though we were going all in for Gakpo Todays fixtures cancelled out of respect I accept that, the weekends no I don’t. I was reading the London Bridge Is Down article I think Bucks linked to it yesterday. No comedy shows allowed to be screened on the BBC until after the funeral, come on. Sad she’s passed away but it was expected, 96 lead a privileged life, I won’t be in a state of mourning for 10 days I’m over it already. Leeds Rhinos game to go ahead as it’s in France, all very silly. Mourn today move on tomorrow and business as usual that’s my vote What’s the difference cancelling all sport but the rest of us are all expected into work today
Might be wrong but I believe it is a code for "The Queen is dead". The note passed to Liz Truss yesterday would have simply said "London Bridge is down". Reading that, she would have known that Lizzy had passed. It's a way to stop it leaking out and to let individuals know before it is made public knowledge.
It's such a well known phrase now though that it's pointless as a secret code unless they have another actual secret one that we don't know about.
It's protocol for when the Queen passed. Explains what they had on standby and what to expect next https://m.independent.ie/world-news...s-setting-out-what-happens-next-41972389.html
This is from memory reading it so it might not be 100% Every three years, the Queen sat down with advisors planning what should happen if she passes away. The code for the event for this three year period was “London Bridge Is Down”. It’s the code to be given to the PM and other important people when she passes, I believe myself this was the note handed out at the House of Commons and that she actually died at 1pm but that’s a different matter. There was a second operation Unicorn if she died in Scotland. It all details what’s to happen at the exact time her death is made public BBC and HMRC sites to display black headlines, no comedy to be shown on the BBC for the period of mourning, funeral on the 11th to 12th day, no sport for two days Lots more I can’t remember
Far too complicated for me. I only understand plain talk. That's why I never have a clue what Jammy and Marcos are babbling on about
yeh I’m with you this. I liked the queen.. a remarkable lady. Day of mourning, bank holiday for the funeral though is enough. Frankly I was getting kissed off that they interrupted the diamond league athletics finals. I’ll be joining the old dear if I have to suffer another 10 days of endless platitudes. Cancelling comedy! You can’t force people to mourn. It’s the 21st century!
I don't know where the country draws the line with the queen or what we should or should not do. I'm one that says let the show go on. I'm at work today and tomorrow why should everyone else not. their no better than me or you. if they mourn and have to show compassion, we all have too not one rule for one and one rule for another. Yes, everyone pays their respects I can understand on the day of her death things should be different but not 2 to 4 days later what does it achieve? Sports fans can pay their respect as a community together before the game sing the national anthem armbands for the players but to shut everything down is a bit too much, I think. The queen loved her sport especially horse racing I bet deep down in her heart she would of not wanted the St Ledger at Donny to be cancelled Saturday. probably get kicked in the teeth off some for my views but it's how I feel.
She had a Billy Bremner poster on her wall apparently, so she'd have been right royally pissed off that the Forest game was being postponed.
There has been no comedy on the BBC since it was taken over by The Guardian. Not sure about trying to sign a striker in January unless we are selling one of our existing strikers? cancelling footy for 2 weeks means a fkd up season is going to be fkd up even more. Expect no summer break for players or increased injuries as we try and complete the already contracted season into an even more shorter timetable. How about England pull out of this ridiculous Qatari world cup
