Just been reading on the BBC about the British and Irish Lions and linked to the video below. Remember watching the brief highlights on the television at the time and reading about the games in the newspapers and combined with the outstanding Welsh team of the 1970’s probably fuelled my love for Rugby Union. Possibly the best Lions team ever and possibly the best Rugby Union team ever IMO. They played a great New Zealand team in New Zealand and for the one and only time so far won a series in New Zealand. They were all great players but my particular favourites were Barry John, JPR Williams and Gareth Edwards. Not often a team is loved by opposing fans but this Lions team were in a way Keegan’s Entertainers were. Also subsequently led to the greatest game ever between the Barbarians and the All Blacks in 1973 and the greatest try ever. (First 2 minutes of second video.
International Rugby Union is my favourite sport, and watching the 2003 WC Final with my Dad is probably my highlight of watching sport, and bear in mind I was at the games against Arsenal (4-4 Gallowgate) and Sunderland (5-1 level 7). The Lions teams in my lifetime have seemingly flattered to deceive more often than not, great players but a lack of cohesion. Bit like watching England in the footy.
I love rugby union and having played scrum half for my school and town, Gareth Edwards is one of my sporting heroes.
Yeah I'd agree up until the last two tours where we've looked a proper side. This however means I have to give begrudging credit to Warren Gatland who I think is a tosser. Tough call.
