Do we still the League Cup or has it become pointless? Is the FA Cup enough to give teams from lower divisions a crack at the top tier sides? I read somewhere that Burton's away game at Man Utd last night would contribute 20% of their total season income, which is significant. What do you reckon?
it will be yet another loss of trophyware caused by the scale and finance in the Champions League and Premier League - these have become brands and business models rather than cups. The UEFA/CWP were put together to form the Europa League and the League Cup will follow and yet other seemingly meaningless 'super' cups are played for only by the big clubs - Intercontinental Cup, World Club whatever so clubs can say they won 5 trophies when really they won 5 million pounds
Still don't really understand the hate. It's a chance to play bigger teams, boost income, test out depth players in the squad, and another chance at a Cup run. What's to hate?
I don't mind it as long as we play the youth or any not getting a run the first team. It's useful for that.
Someone suggested on the old wireless that it could have a development aspect, like 6 players in the 11 starting should be under 23 etc.
The Scottish Challenge Cup has expanded to include teams from Northern Ireland, Ireland and Wales. It also has U23 teams from the SPL and the winners of each of the Junior leagues below the SFL. Purists would **** their pants at the idea in England, but I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Gives lower league teams a chance to test themselves against teams from other countries in what would otherwise be meaningless friendlies. There's talk of teams from the Faroes entering next year too. Crusaders, Linfield and TNS are still in the competition. On topic, the League Cup is a decent chance to give players debuts that otherwise wouldn't get one. It also puts youngsters in the shop window for potential loan clubs. I like it, I think people only dislike it because they see it as an extra set of fixtures, but I didn't hear many people complaining when we were in the semi finals last season.
i like the League Cup. Teams should offer it respect. The winners should gain a place in the Champion's League along with the FA Cup Winners & Premier League Winners.
I've always thought the Champion's League should be for the teams that win their league. Not for teams that finish 4th, they aren't champions.
Me too. Bob Paisley's Mrs hit the nail on the head when asked, after United won it in '99, if it was harder to win in Bob's day. "Of course it was, you had to win the League first" was her reply (or summat like). If they insist on the name & numerous entrants from each Country then the very least they should do is offer the supporters what it says on the lid. A League of Champions. They could then rename the Europa League "The Not Quite Champions League" & lump all the losers, also rans & Jocks into it.
Yes I agree. Anyway did you watch that programme on Monday night after Newsnight called the search for another earth ??
I didn't, but I can guess it was about the 10 'Earth like planets' they've found recently. Was Gliese 581c mentioned by any chance?
