Last night I watched the Lawman a sky documentary about Denis Law. It reminded me of what a great superstar he was in the game.
They showed a photograph of Denis Law as best man (when both at Huddersfield) at Gordon Low’s wedding, they were both born in Aberdeen and Gordon joined City in 1961 and was with us for 7 years making over 200 appearances for us.
And that in turn reminded me about an incident around 1965 to 1967, a school friend (who later sadly passed as a teenager with a heart defect) and his girlfriend used to baby sit for Gordon Low, who lived in a cul de sac behind the Kings Head pub, Bedminster Down in Oldmead Walk, the club owned several houses there and Gordon, Chuck Drury, Mike Gibson and one or two other players lived there.
This friend and several others of us were playing football on ‘the front’ (on the A38) at Bedminster Down during the summer holidays and a car stopped and out jumped Gordon Low who approached my friend to ask him to baby sit that night and suddenly walking behind was none other than Denis Law, we were all gobbed smacked and just in awe, he shouted out “give me the ball” and proceeded to do keepy uppys and other tricks, a couple of minutes later they were off on their way and we could not believe what had just happened.

RIP Chris, gone far far too young.

    What a great story !!
I've recorded it but haven't watched it as yet. A great entertainer was Dennis Law. I was lucky enough to see him play a couple of times when I was a kid.

Terrific experience for you, a great memory about a superb player.

I was watching some program yesterday tracking the Bee Gees and how they changed their style and evolved with the generations, I didn't realise they had so much hate directed at them because of their disco phase, right down to riots in the stadia where they played and having police protection vehicles escort off of planes when they arrived at various destinations, it got so bad they gave up performing for a while and concentrated on song writing for big stars of the day such as, Streisand, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers etc but they kept going.

Quite an eye opener, great band, great talent, I still love them.

I've just found this article on said program for anyone interested.

I was honoured to meet Denis Law back in the late 90s at a dinner speech, think it was at the Marriott...Very funny and humble guy.
Took the Mickey in a nice way about Bobby Charlton through the Man U days, saying how he wouldn't join in the shenanigans of what they used to get up to..
And although I was quite young, can also remember meeting Gordon Low, Mike Gibson and Jack Connor (friends with my Dad, lived on Highridge Green) close to where we used to live. My dad got to know quite a few of them from that era, spending his Luncheon vouchers in a cafe that they all used to go to (on North Street I think), used to quite often come home saying he'd been chatting to the likes Chris Garland, John Galley & co, sometimes included Alan Dicks!!!
It was through Jack Connor & Alan Dicks that I managed trials for the City that was coached by Keith Fear & Gerry Sweeney
My Gran used to have lodgers in Thanet Road, one being Gerry Sharpe.

Sorry, that was a complete waffle, I got carried away with The Dennis Law & Gordon Low bit!!
Cliftonville eat your heart out, that's how you waffle <laugh><laugh>
