After sitting and watching another abject performance from downing tonight I was trying to think when was the last time we had a winger who could consistently beat his man and provide decent service.
And,I am sure you will correct me if I'm wrong, is it really John Barnes? Steve mcmannaman?
I know we have had a few like kewell and Riera who did when they had a mind to but I can't think of any others.
I just hope courthino ,if played there, can actually beat his man and then deliver a cross of quality.

I go Digger. SM could have been better, I think if he'd been Spanish, in Spain he would have been if that makes any sense at all.....

But what if Barnes was Spanish and played in Spain but Macca was Brazilian and played in Spain?

Response to the OP, perhaps when Gerrard played on the right under Rafa?

Neither Digger or Macca were true wingers so they don't count. I stand to be corrected but since 1963 we've only had Callaghan, Thompson and Highway who could truly be considered as succesful dedicated wingers.

The only Downing contributions I noticed tonight were a 'cross' that floated into touch and a pathetic back heel attempt that gave away possession. Thinking about how much a certain Henderson is coming on makes Stewie's anonymity all the more obvious. Just cancel his contract and forget he was ever here, oh wait,if we're looking at a meaningful contribution it's like he isn't anyway.

Neither Riera or Pennent should even be named in the same breath as the 3 I forwarded.

but again was not a true winger

As far back as I can go we only have Alan A'Court and Billy Liddell to add (though be the time that I saw him Liddell had moved to CF)

And yet united always seem to have at least 2 quality wingers who create so much.
I agree that Barnes and macca weren't true wingers in the sense of the word and possibly heighway was the last out and out winger but they were 2 players who could take a man on and beat him consistently ( in mcmannaman case 2 or 3 times!) . Why don't we have that type anymore. I fact few of our squad have the ability to beat a player. Maybe Johnson is the only one.

Wilshire last night and most games I've seen him is terrific with the ball at his feet and is very difficult to dispossess as is corzola and yet we have no one like that either.
    Why?

One of my favourite players but still not a true winger more left sided midfielder. Great left foot though as you say
