..........we had something to play for at Hillsborough didn't quite go to plan - remember?

It was around 2009 and Dai Jones took the lads up there for the last game of the season needing a point for a playoff spot. Preston had just stuffed us 6-0 and were just behind us in the table.

Dai - in all his wisdom - decided to leave McCormack on the bench rather than playing him out wide left alongside Bothroyd and Chops in the belief we could go up there, sit back, soak them up and come away with the point we needed.

The rest is history. We lost it 1-0 and I think Preston won their game to get level on points that same day. The result was we finished behind them in 7th place, equal on points and equal on goal differences but (I think) they'd scored 1 more goal than us to take 6th spot.

That 6-0 drubbing at Deepdale a week or so before was blamed but there were a lot of us thinking we'd gone to Hillsborough with the wrong attitude for that last game. We should have taken the game to them and forced the issue.

7 years on and no doubt about it, we shouldn't make the same mistake again. I know this time it's different and we need to win it - a point just wont do. They're a very good side and will be set up to preserve a point because that's all they need.

This is **** or bust time - take it to them and if we lose it, no big deal. I'd rather get beat 4-3 than come away with a 0-0 draw trying to pinch a goal at the death.

From memory, and I could be wrong Sparks, it went further titties to the sun the week after the Preston drubbing. We needed a good result at home to Ipswich having sneaked a 2 - 2 draw away at Charlton during the week, we came back from 2 down in the last 10 minutes. However, we contrived to lose 3.0 at home (it's amazing how often that score has come back to haunt us in the last 8 years or so) and then went on to the Wendies needing just a single point to reach the playoffs.

The rest is bo££ocks with Dave Jones lack of decision well described in your post.

I have no confidence following the last few weeks, but after events of a few years ago to deny us play off places perhaps we are due a positive turn. I won't be holding my breath though. That might have happened for Saturday's penalty.

Bluey - I can remember Middlesbrough beating us 3-0 at home a couple of years later to knacker us again that year.

What was so bizarre about that Preston drubbing and subsequent capitulation was that they were brilliant against Burnley a few weeks previously against the team who then managed to get up via the play-offs!

This time round you can't help feel that City will struggle against Wednesday before a full house especially as I read that Immers is rated 50-50, Ralls and Zahore have injury concerns as well so who's going to score the goals and can we keep a clean sheet?

At least City have taken it to the near end of the season.

That's very true Nin. We wouldn't have put money on that last autumn. Well, most of us anyway, Sparkey probably would have.

Bluey - I wouldn't have put a penny on City to go up until that Brighton game and the emergence of Immers. It's true we were outclassed by Boro the next game and once again I thought we'd had more False Dawns than a transvestite's convention.

The Brighton game was the start of it for me though, and when we went on to beat Preston and and old rivals the Wurzels a couple of games later, I decided to get off Slade's back for half an hour.......<laugh>

I stuck the tenner on City at 40/1 a couple of weeks back in response to BT's mention of his tenner at 8/1 at the start of the season. Cash out has now gone back up to £9.50 ahead of the showdown game this coming weekend. What will it be after though?

If we lose or draw then it will have all gone that's for sure, but supposing we should win that game eh?

Still a lot for City to do assuming we came back with all 3 points but I reckon there will be a substantial increase in that cash out offer if we do. If so, then the right results on the last day putting us 6th would be the real tester of my resolve....:emoticon-0105-wink:

The last month was not great, but the season could have been worse. As Sparkey said, I think another serious push for promotion may happen next season. The club is reasonably stable at the moment.
