is saturday to be jamie collins and terry gornells last home game for the shrews? it is rumoured that swindon and preston are after jamie and gornells talents are wanted elsewhere. shall we also be losing ainsworth and bradshaw who both are looking for regular 1st team action. jc is out of contract in the summer but i hope gt will persuade him he has a big future for shrews amongst the big clubs of L1
I think we will lose Collins unless his loyalty (He turned down Burton) shows through. Gornell has another year on his contract yet and so does Bradshaw. Ainsworth - sounds like he caused upset in the squad and didn't associate with good people; only a rumour but perhaps that is why he is where he is and more than likely out of the door come summer. He might get offered a contract so that another team has to pay us compensation though...
Players coming & going is part & parcel of football. Yes, we've had some players perform well this year & they may be the ones to move on. But there are always replacements & new fans favourites just over the horizon. Being a L1 club, we will arguably attract better players. That's should we get there.. Also, we've got to trust GT's judgement on Ainsworth. Something's gone on, be it professional or in his private life. On all accounts he didn't produce the goods at Burton & hasn't done for several months (for us) so is he really worth the worry?
Correct in that. Collins loyalty has been already called into question by the virtue of the fact that he turned down Burton for greater remuneration with Shrewsbury. As for Ainsworth, he has made some unflattering and barely comprehensible comments on Twitter. I feel a touch of sympathy for him and he has been replaced in the team with a feeble excuse, initially, and rarely did anything wrong unless he needed to tear around the pitch like a headless chicken. If he is to leave who can forget his hat trick at Lincoln, his total destruction of Kevin Kilbane at Derby and his last gasp winner against Barnet
I do not think it is sensible to talk about player loyalty. They have a short career on short contracts and Collins is quite entitled to explore other avenues when he will be out of contract soon. If he receives a decent offer from us I think he is quite likely to stay and continue his development as GT is a very steady hand at the tiller compared to the situation he might get into at a club like Swindon where the current manager (probably not for much longer) seems to think it is all about him rather than the team. I agree it would be a great loss to lose a talented player like Ainsworth but you must respect GT on this one - a player who causes unrest and does not appear to be doing it on the field or in training cannot be tolerated for long - it is all about the team and we do not appear to have missed him too much.
I have stated before that a friend of mine who's a relative of Wycherley's was informed by Uncle Roland himself that Turner and Ainsworth fell out. Last time I saw him on the bench, he looked awful warming up, and was useless during his time with Burton. I do like him as a player but can't see any future for him with the Town.
If you are offered a job with better wages at a bigger company then you would probably take it. Would not take offence to any player that does that, as long as it is not in an underhand way.
Apart from not liking these sorts of threads while we're still competing (although I don't ignore them!), we shouldn't sell ourselves short. Just because other clubs are interested in our players doesn't mean they'll choose to join those clubs in preference to us. Preston and Swindon both have recent histories of financial and staff instability and managers that might not be around for long, whatever's said now. Collins is also from the Midlands and may prefer to stay in the area. Gornell's still under contract next season so there's no obvious reason why we'd be releasing him. If we're in League 1 next season then playing for us shouldn't be an unattractive option. Why would Swindon be better? Let's face it, any of the promoted clubs could do a Chesterfield - or a Stevenage. But, as ever, players come and go and those that go can be replaced. Look at the list of some of the leavers from recent seasons (Holt, Davies, Tierney, Edwards, Hart, Humphrey, Hibbert, Langmead) - they've all been replaced pretty well and, more importantly, the club and team are better placed than when they were with us. Onwards and upwards (hopefully literally, on Saturday).
I agree with Shrewdchemic in that there may not necessarily be a huge difference between Preston and ourselves. We are a financially stable club, and I think we must offer pretty big wages, as player like Richards and Hazell are going from key players for their teams in League One to us. Adding onto that, we don't spend much at all on transfer fees, so I'd say we could offer pretty tasty wages. I expect Gornell to stay. We don't have a record of selling first choice players under Turner whilst their contracts remain intact; I can't think of anyone other than Harrold. Ultimately though, I'm preparing for Collins and others to leave (Collins being the main blow since I do have a bit of man love for him and have rated him since we signed him). That way, I'll be less disappointed if they do leave, and happier if they stay. I should also add that I think we wouldn't be too dented by the loss of one or two starting players, as we have such a strong team.
