Today we have 6 Flat meetings with 2 Derby's, one on either side of "The Pond", The Irish Derby run at The Curragh (5:30p.m), and The Pitman's Derby run at Newcastle (3:50p.m).

The Pitman's Derby A.K.A. The Northumberland Plate, inaugurated in 1833 this 2 Mile 19 Yard (3,236 M) race originally took place on a Wednesday, for many years this meeting formed the centrepiece of the holiday period known as "Race Week" for local mine workers. The Meeting ceased to be a holiday in 1949, and switched to a Saturday in 1952.

    Newcastle 7 Races 1:35-5:00p.m. The Nothumberland Plate/ Pitman's Derby Off @ 3:50p.m.

The Irish Derby has been moved to an evening slot in the last couple of seasons in order to try and attract an audience, both on television and at the racecourse.

They probably still have not figured out that the race being totally monopolised by Aidan O’Brien for most of this Century has made it thoroughly pointless for punters and viewers. This year he provides more than half the declared runners, all of whom ran at Epsom. Two of the three opponents ran at Epsom as well, one of them finishing second. Only John Oxx of all the trainers in Ireland thinks that he has a horse worth taking a chance on. Can it beat the “best horse” that O’Brien has ever trained?

I suspect this is why so many Irish racegoers travel over to Cheltenham every year because at least their National Hunt racing is not completely dominated by Coolmore so they can see competitive sport over the winter.

QM that chip on your shoulder must make passing through doorways pretty difficult from time to time <doh>

Obviously not a betting proposition but I expect a very slick Aussie win tomorrow but perhaps a very narrow margin. Wouldn't surprise me should young O'Brien keep him on the bridle until the last possible moment and simply let him win very snugly with the handbrake still engaged...just a thought. Disappointing turnout and I guess it shows the regards the favourite is now held in having already proved himself the supreme 3 year-old at Epsom.

Know he's a forum favourite but I wouldn't touch Maarek with counterfeit tomorrow on that ground at likely odds-on. Wouldn't be surprised should be scratched before the off.

    No betting for me.

I was expecting odds on with Maarek too but he's available at 9/4. Ground against him completely and, if he runs, he's only doing so because yard are desperate to get a run into him. By far the best horse in the race but absolutely NOT a bet. Despite being by far the best horse in the race, he is nowhere near the same horse on quick ground.

Will be cheering him all the way home though.

Windsor 1 55 Total Demolition - No price yet but guide price is 7s but like hell it will be that, it's likely going to get smashed, been told this horse is thought as something special and Olly really really likes it and thinks the world of it and expects it to be another stable star. Only negative for me is Spencer onboard.

4 10 Gamesome 5/1 - Take this price, will complete a double on the day for Olly, ran a fantastic race last time now dropped in grade in a lesser field and will bounce back to winning ways by a few lengths.

7 05 Doncaster - Medici Time 20/1 - Will likely come last but so much lower than it's last winning mark and if it did have a revival then it's a great price and i'm just going to keep backing it as i have been until it wins again as it will pop up soon.

6 10 Curragh - Paddy the celeb 14/1 - Another who has been running better than his recent form suggests and is back on a winning mark now with a good claimer taking a nifty 3lbs off

Also EXTORTIONIST runs again tomorrow @ The Curragh, has come out of last weeks win well but isn't really expected to win tomorrow, Olly is just giving him a try in a step up in grade to see how he fares so he can plan out where to go with him for the rest of the season, would say it's worth a cheeky bet just incase but at 3/1 there is no real value in it tbh so stick with the other 2.

    Best of luck lads!

    17.30 Curragh - Geoffrey Chaucer - 9/2 W/O Australia

Cannot believe the price of him tomorrow, the favourite unless the ground deteriates with a months worth of rain over night should bolt up! but the second string to him is not a bad horse himself. Was denied a clear run in the derby trial at Leoparstown and although he ran no race at the derby, he just didn't get the track which is nothing to worry about as it is a hard course to handle and he didn't have a hard race which will go in his favour. I fancy his chances against the rest of the field. I have had a little e/w on him aswell with the favourite in the field @ 25/1 just incase but only very very small as I expect Australia to win very easily

15.50 Newcastle- Big Thunder 12/1 ew

One I'm not getting massively into but does catch my eye. Seemed to improve with every run last year and took the weight rise and step up in trip in his stride. Starts this season off a 5lb higher mark but the step up in trip should be in his favour. SMP knows how to get his long distance horses ready for these types of races and doesn't send many up north if they don't have at least a place chances. Let's just say he doesn't just come up to see the angel of the north. But am fan of this horse and owes me nothing tomorrow but is improving and is likely to improve more and more this season starting with this tomorrow

I often wonder why Coolmore go to the Irish Derby from Epsom as at best it usually just franks the previous piece of form established at Epsom but adds nothing to a horses form. I could understand them getting a classic down for a horse that may have been narrowly beaten at Epsom in the case of Kingston Hill, but for Australia surely the Eclipse or king George has to be the next race. In going to the Eclipse he adds to his form a new distance at Group one and also against older horses, If going to the King George he adds Britain's top middle distance race open to all ages. These things will take him further down the road but just testing the Epsom form again will add little. If they wish to add substance to Australia being their best ever he will need prove it at some time or other. I know they nearly got away with proclaiming a great in Camalot without ever having to prove it but that was only due to the triple crown idea. Australia will need race his elders if hoping to be taken seriously as a great horse.

Australia is an Irish owned and trained horse and connections want to run the colt in front of their own fans, who do like to see a good horse!....support their own Classic...always been their way and why not?

Inresting that Dubai value the race enough to continue it vast sponsorship....perhaps its globally recruited specialist marketeers should speak to our little empty glass anti everything expert for direction re the merits of the race, follow on impact the sponsorship has on the Dubai Duty Free brand and the usage of their budget moving forward?...

Blue, the King George is dead in the water and has been for years...I think Galileo went that route for Coolmore off the top of my head as a derby winner and was the last one.

Kingston Hill looks a fair price. He had to do plenty early in the Derby from that draw, he stayed on well and Australia was pretty much all out at the line. I think the track will suit Kingston Hill better than Epsom did and he should have an easier trip so if they let him run Australia might need to work to beat him again. Australia is obviously the better horse and he should win but 1m4 at the Curragh can be a stiff test and Kingston Hill is tempting at the prices.

I dont think either has a chance of winning an Arc.

I like this one too, Sir Mark Prescott never has many runners before the end of June and I did read that the stable had been under a bit of a cloud but all is good now and he is raring to get the season started. Also I think the horse has an entry in the Irish St Ledger, so at 12/1 & 4 places with B365 it's definitely worth a bet.

The other one I like in the same race is Tropical Beat 20/1 with Silvestra De Souza on board, David O'Meara's stable has been in fine form recently and he has only had this horse in his care for 4 runs, was a very creditable 3rd on his return at Newmarket recently.

    Cheers Trevez

Without Coolmore's support it's arguable that the Irish Derby would have been a sorry affair in recent years. In fact there have been occasions when you could say the same about Epsom. They should be applauded for supporting the race.

I won't be betting in it though. Not when Hughesie's at Windsor.

Indescribable seems like great value in the first at Chester. The 2yo had his first run at Ascot and put in a shocker. He stopped as though shot a couple of furlongs out and was beaten 32l. Three weeks later at Chester, he finished 6th of 7 but finished much closer, beaten just 4.5l. Then 11 days later at Yarmouth, earlier this month, he strolled away with a Maiden. I doubt he beat much, but the big bloke won really well. Steve Prescott will start odds on, but the 3s about Indescribable looks pretty good.
