The George Washington Hotel in Washington is now referred to on websites as:-

"The Mercure NEWCASTLE George Washington Hotel"!

Now even parts of theunwashedland are being referred to as Newcastle!

Remember the mackems claimed they had a bigger population/area by including washington!

What next? The Newcastle Glass Musuem? No thanks!

just like to add, that washington is LITERALLY half geordies half mackems. in my street theres about an even bunch of both sets which makes it fantastic on derby days.

they might claim it to be part of sunderland. but in the eyes of the govt. we have a newcastle postcode! (NE37/NE38 etc)

What about their whinge that the torch will not be staying in the biggest city in the NE. Are they for real. At least they have the biggest disabled full access park though. At least it will be a park until vandalised accordingly. They can now bool shopping trolleys into the lake 3 abreast.

Take away the pop/area of washington/houghton and it wouldn't even be 3/4 the size of newcastle. Seems the mackems want to include areas with a majority of toon supporters in their numbers. Wonder what proportion of Newcastle's population are mackem supporters?

Sunderland is still better. They have a swimming pool next to the stadium that is up a height! Probably to drown themselves after watching the shower of **** next door!

Sunderland's biggest attraction is its regular buses to Newcastle.

This is interesting! I live right next to the George Washington and it's actually closer to Gateshead than it is to Sunderland by a fair whack. Without doubt Washington is more NUFC than Mackems, probably more than 60% too. Remember, Washy is a typical satellite town that swelled up in the 60's and 70's so most of the population travel to Newcastle/Gateshead or Sunderland to work. A lot of Gateshead and Sunderland families moved here in the 70's so it genuinely is a mixed bag.

I'm quite proud of where I'm from, I work in Sunderland and trust me it's a world apart from Washington, or anywhere else for that matter. I know plenty of sound folk from that way but I've also met a scary amount of people of all ages with a very narrow minded "village" mentality. I don't care what anyone says about Sunderland, it's a town. It hasn't evolved into a city and it's some way off if you ask me. The only culture they have over there is charvas and Chinese students. The whole city centre is like Wallsend high street or Clayton Street in Newcastle, they don't have any nice bits!

That's class. Such a shame none of that exists anymore.

While you're at it, I found this. Pisses me off no end. It's Washington Old Hall in Washington. It's not in ****ing Sunderland!

Washington is a town in the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, England. Historically part of County Durham, it joined a new county in 1974 with the creation of Tyne and Wear. Washington is located geographically at an equal distance from the centres of Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland, hence it has close ties to all three cities.

Washington was designated a new town in 1964 and expanded dramatically by the creation of new villages and the absorption of areas of Chester-le-Street to house overspill population from surrounding cities.

Played cricket for them many years ago and the locals then classed it as part of Gateshead.
