Morning all, sunshine and showers forecast for today. Tomorrow I head north towards the Channel, and a hopefully calm crossing. Rough sea conditions have little effect on me, but Mme is not so hardy. Strangely she never suffered until we had one very bad crossing, and since then she finds that just staying in her seat is the safest bet.
That's tough Leo and no need to apologise. Much better to let it out than not. Just wish you were both being better served!
Good morning all from a mild and dry atm Weston-super-Mare. Much rain promised for today! Have a good day!
Morning all. Time to load the car and head off north. 500 kms to Dieppe, four hours on a ferry, then 30 miles to hotel. At one time this would have seemed like a short trip, but no longer. My days of driving from north to south of France in one day are finished. Must be getting older. Hopefully the wifi on the ferry will be working. At one time you had to pay for access, but now it is all part of the service. It does help to while away the time. Have a good day whatever you have planned.
Evening all. In mid channel and the sea is like a duck pond. Left France under a blue sky, but looking towards England there is a black sky and I can see the rain falling. Just tucked into a very good meal, including a half bottle of Bordeaux for 13 pounds. The wifi is ultra slow, but everywhere you look people are trying to use it. Just sailed into the rain and there is a fabulous double rainbow going into the sea. Last time I stopped at the hotel where I am heading to tonight there were unannounced road works and I visited parts of Sussex that I knew by name, but no more. I hope to get there rather quicker tonight.
Thanks Leo, I will keep it in mind. This trip will see the last of my four children married and off my hands. They can and do come to stay with us which seems a better idea than us coming across the Channel.
Morning, Dave; morning, all. These iPads are clever. As soon as I press M it offers me ‘morning’ and ‘my’. Then it offers me “Dave’, then ‘morning’ and then ‘all’. Once that’s typed it doesn’t offer them again. Super day on Saturday at Butterley. Saw the Duchess of Sutherland being rebuilt (she’s in 1000s of pieces at the moment), apparently she’ll be ready by July. Whole family had great time, all my Dad’s children and grandchildren in attendance, plus spouses, we made quite a gathering. On the way to the sheds, I picked up a couple of pieces of real LMS coal () for his layout. Conversation between Seb, Matej and I: “The power of these 1930s Stanier engines is colossal. They could pull 700 tons.” “How much is that, Dad?” “Well, let’s work it out. Mum weighs about a hundredweight and there are twenty hundredweight to a ton. So that means that in a tug-of-war between this engine and 14000 people the same size as Mum, the engine would win. And it could do it uphill. At 100mph.” Jaws drop, new respect for these ‘museum pieces’.
Morning all from an overcast but dry Sussex. It took 45 minutes to get through border control when we arrived last night. On the French side there were four gates open, while this side only two. They didn't wish to search my car. They didn't search any French registered cars suggesting they think we might not speak English. Time to eat again, then continue heading towards leafy Bucks. Have a good day whatever you have planned.
Morning all from leafy Bucks. Cloudy and breezy here. Tried the suit on that I was measured for last autumn. Think I will have to starve myself until Saturday.
You just "let it out". One of my very best friends is currently undergoing treatment for Myelodysplastic Syndrome having had his first dose of chemo yesterday and has already had several weeks in hospital - and apparently the doctors say they have caught it in time as this often develops into myeloid leukaemia. He was the singer in a band I was in when I was a teenager - local heroes around Herts/Beds/Bucks called Rough Measure and prior to that he was in Urban Clearway. Never came to much but it's the taking part that counts. His son was on Watford youth books for a while and played several games for Scarborough when they were in the league. In the words of Spike Milligan: there's a lot of it about!
