Anybody see the article on what Pompey still owe players? fooking hell, it really makes you put into perspective how essential it is to run a football club properly! what I cant get my head around is how they have been forgotton about in the media to a certain extent, almost like the media don't want us to see the flip side of premier league madness, I do wonder if Pompey are an uncomfortable truth that the premier league would wish went away, all we see from the media is the expensive signings and nothing about how those expensive signings are actually destroying the fabric of football in a way.

Swansea seem to cut the cloth accordingly, even with the purchase of a £12m pound player we have still appeared under the radar of the big spenders. Intrestingly two clubs that have had a bit of financial trouble have been some of the biggest spenders ie, Southampton and Cardiff, Norwich also to a lesser extent.

Will these teams ever learn ? is the risk worth taking? surely seeing what went on at Pompey should keep us supporters in check with reality ?

Here is what Pompey still pay to players who left them years ago

    HERMANN HREIDARSSON

    £42,935.86 – 40 months of £1,073.40.

    KELVIN ETUHU

    £3,000 – one payment made on Aug 30, 2013.

    JOEL WARD

    £20,206.57 – 40 months of £505.16.

    STEVE FINNAN

    £88,312.50 – 40 months of £2,207.81.

    MICHAEL BROWN

    £472,375 – lump-sum payment of £200,000 on Aug 30, 2013. 40 months of £6,809.38.

    RICHARD HUGHES

    £372,484.42 – lump-sum payment of £200,000 on Aug 30, 2013. 40 months of £4,312.11.

    LIAM LAWRENCE

    £616,666.54 – lump-sum payment of £200,000 on Aug 30, 2013. 40 months of £10,416.67.

    DAVE KITSON

    £608,333.36 – lump-sum payment of £150,000 on Aug 30, 2013. 40 months of £11,458.33.

    TAL BEN HAIM

    £1,633,333.36 – lump-sum payments of £650,000 on Aug 30, 2013 and £150,000 on Aug 31, 2014. 40 months of £20,833.33

    DAVID NUGENT

    £143,250 - 40 monthly payments of £3,581.25.

    DAVID JAMES

    £145,921.90 – 40 months of £3,648.05.

    KANU

    £155,314.50 – three lump-sum payments of £51,771.50 in March 2014, 2015 and 2016.

    BENJANI

    £214,572.73 – 40 months of £5,364.32.

    HAYDEN MULLINS

    £632,281.32 – 28 monthly payments of £21,867.19. One lump-sum payment of £20,000 in January 2016.

    AARON MOKOENA

    £288,844.80 – 40 months of £7,225.92.

    DAVID NORRIS

    £182,729.92 – 40 months of £4,568.26.

    ARUNA DINDANE

    £176,245.03 – 40 months of £4,406.13.

    LUKE VARNEY

    £153,818 – 40 months of £3,845.

    ERIK HUSEKLEPP

    £40,000 –

    The list goes on !

What a scary thought! imagine paying £6,4m quid out to players who played for you 3 yrs ago while you are struggling in the bottom division? its quite unbelievable and a sobering thought to the flip side of premier league life.

Id rather see us go down to the championship rather than spend to try and stay in this money pit of a league!
Good luck to the supporters trust of Pompey <ok>

As you say , this is the dark side of football (well one of many) , inherited debt for someone else's fantasy ,due diligence on who can own football clubs , you've got to be joking .<grr>

Until a Manchester United, Real Madrid or Barcalona size club go into liquidation, then this is the direction most football clubs will be heading, and a massive amount of credit must go to Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board for the way in which they have bucked the trend over recent years <ok>

We keep saying "until" but look at Leeds utd, There wasnt many bigger than them at the time and Even that didnt seem to matter.

I honestly beleive that the media Are turning the wheels of this one, wolves Are a great example, aston villa Even, they cant Get players off the books and therefore pay a hefty price for mis management. Not inserting relegation clauses into QPR players contracts is another one.

Its obvious to me that Even if a man utd went the same way nothing would change.

Im convinced that in the premier league teams Are given more media if they buy into the circus, more media equals more revenue etc, etc. The premier league is now the pinnicle of greed, and that is the vehicle that is pushing and destroying modern football and cuture in equal krasjer. Scary!

About time you put something, wondered where you had been lately Norway!..................<laugh>

That is unbelievable I must say, and it looks like it could keep Portsmouth locked down in the lower leagues for years to come, definitely no the way to run a club, thank goodness for our board and Jenkins, they have set such a wonderful example to the entire football world, of how a club should be run, and long may it continue. By the way Cardiff are spending big?........<cheers>

    Agree .

This Article in the press today really highlights how close a lot of clubs are sailing to the wind. I honestly fear for the future of our own club if we get caught up in trying to flex muscle in the premier league, its a really sobering thought!

If the Swans got relegated then we would lose a lot of the plastic fans taking us back down to 15/16,000 all the bloggers and hangers on will be off to support Chelsea and Utd again and the Dai hard fans that have been somewhat alienated in certain aspects will be left holding the baby so to speak. We must not forget our prem league Legacy and that was to grow the infrastructure of the club and give us stability for years to come, I believe the board are following this to the best of their abilities so we must count ourselves lucky .

Bigger clubs than us have struggled while being in the premier league as much as those relegated from the premier league. Why the hell are teams pushing massive debt when all this money is apparently floating around ? its sheer madness isn't it ? Aston Villa have been cost cutting for a few years, Sunderland are starting to do it now,Fulham is another one if I remember correctly. Villa and Sunderland are fooking massive clubs and they are struggling to cope with the financial side of things ,makes you wonder how the hell the Swans have achieved what they have don't it ?

Cardiff have spent nearly £40m to stay up, its a calculated risk . They were £85m in debt going up into the prem league ,they are getting about £65m a year ,£40m of that has gone in transfer fees wages and bonuses will no doubt take them to about £25m if we compare with our more frugal structure so that puts them at zero on the balance sheet for their first year in the premier league!

Where is the legacy and the common sense business management ? im not going to single out Cardiff on this score as most of the clubs are spending way over what they can afford, so what is the point of being in the prem if it only means you end up in massive debt ?

    Look at
    Wolves
    Sheff utd.
    Sheff wed.
    Leeds
    Notts Forest
    Leicster
    Bolton
    Coventry

All fine football clubs with seemingly decent owners that just couldn't handle the finance and the "must spend to survive culture" of the premier league, for some of those teams ,along with Pompey the prem dream has pretty much been a death sentence for them. Coventry city being the next major club on the way out.

Even this year we have seen unprecidented spending by premier league teams including ourselves,Norwich,Southampton ,Cardiff and west ham breaking our transfer records by multi millions! everyone of those clubs I just mentioned has had serious financial problems in the past ,proof that lessons are not being learned.

The Swans made a fortune last season in selling off players like Joe Allen, rodgers and scott Sinclair so we were quite lucky to have some extra money in the pot this season, problems will come for us next season, if others continue to spend I see us stopping at a certain level and saying "**** that" ! our future is far too important,we know this from learning it the hard way, the others haven't.

Why do you think i'm against paying £12 million for one player. Its a risky road to go down at this stage of our premiership stay...We went against all our principals and have opened the flood gates on players wages. Big mistake that could come back to haunt us...
