    Good read that.

Pretty much sums up why I despise McLaren, they're so corporate. Whitmarsh seems more concerned with making money than winning races, he goes on about replacing Ferrari as the biggest brand and describes his drivers as "products". I can't stand the bloke, he epitomises what I loathe about society in general where anyone with any personality or willingness to express an opinion (such as Byrne) is chastised, leading to drivers delivering a stock answer during interviews and people being frightened to say what they feel.

I think the main issue is tabloid newspapers and their sensationalist headlines twisting what people say.

Yeah, they all seem to have sanitised lifestyles, F1 racers used to be like Rock-gods, now they're more like great aunt Mathilda, in bed by 9 with a cup of horlicks. I personally think the money men have it all wrong, people love a rebel, and no one likes an asslicker except the recipient

Nostalgia is all well and good, but life moves on, times change, harking after some long gone era can be an exercise in futility

In the old days when F1 drivers were ni angels it's not a coincidence that the biggest advertisers and sponsors were the alcohol and tobacco firms

    Player, Walker, Marlboro etc etc

Unfortunately their target audience have all died out (pardon the pun) partly as a result of the effectiveness of associating these deadly products with the danger of F1

The new global audiences that have arrived to save F1 are linked to new sponsors and advertisers, tapping into the desires of a new sporty and clean living generation with disposable income

Athletiscism, talent, lifestyle are now in

Lewis for example is a dream to the sponsors, because he has talent, is clean living (apart from casual hooning) has the MTV lifestyle and achieved all this on his ability and not due to some entitlement or inheritance

From timbuctoo to tennesseee the young can relate to this

So any amount of old crusties bemoaning the modern situation and banging on about good old days might be better off concentrating on reducing their contribution to carbon emissions

cookin. yu know nothing, the only reason they don't advertise tobacco and alcohol is because they are banned, if they weren't the f1 teams would jump at the chance to take them all back, why do you think we got Hungary? As for Lewis being a sponsors dream, is he? I don't see him in very many ads, and his corporate design personality is a turn off for most I believe, that's why he's far less popular now than he was. I like watching him race, but out of the car I just find him totally fake.

i couldn't care less what you think tbh, and cookinflat6 is normally aspirated flat 6 from 606, a rabid Hamelot, and every post he's made so far has been a veiled insult at anyone daring to say what Hamilton is, so he gets back what he puts in. as for LH, havn't liked him since he used one of the McLaren crew as a scapegoat for his lying in order to preserve his 'corporate identity'. I couldn't care less that he lied, but scapegoating someone shows a severe lack of morale fibre and I persoanlly can't stand people who do that and cost someone their lively hood.

what did you expect? as soon as a hamelot comes on not606 this is gonna be typical, it wasn't even about Hamilton and yet NATS as he is known on 606 jumps in with both feet, he was a prick there, why think he'll be any different here? check some of his other posts if you don't believe me. in a months time it ill be worse as you'll get the rest of the Hamelots trying to provoke as usual.

Ladies behave. This was always going to be a contentious subject due to the fact the drivers' perceived personas are being called into question, but if you can't discuss it without resorting to personal insults just ignore the topic altogether. <ok>

I came here because I thought the subject of the thread was interesting. What a shame it has been corrupted into an unpleasant diversion.

Even as I write, I'm tempted not to bother clicking 'Post Quick Reply'.

    But I did…

I blame 606 coming down. I don't think we'll get many come here than what we think, but it'll be the deluded fanboys. Yeah, it would be good to have more Hamilton in my point of view, but I've seen how bad they are, and I'd rather be the only Hamilton fan here rather than them coming over

    Don't worry mclarenf1

I am confident that if Lorca can reform and become a respected mod here, then the Lewis fanboys can also modify their outrageous behaviour

Remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas <laugh>

You could threaten to ban fanboys over race weekends

That could give you a boost Red Bull can only dream of
