News Scunthorpe will be without full-back Andy Dawson, who is playing in his testimonial match for Hull City against Real Betis. Winger Etienne Esjajas remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. VIEW FROM THE TRAINING GROUND Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws told BBC Radio Humberside: "There's a huge difference from last season in terms of working together as a team and that is a great base to work from. If you don't look like conceding then it gives the players further up the pitch more confidence. "We need to improve in the final third. We've done alright but we haven't been as good as we can be. "We know we'll be in for a tough time because they want to get a first win under their belts as quick as possible. "It's going to be a stern test for us but one that we are capable of passing. If we're totally at it we can come away with a good result

I know I should be looking forward to our first home game Hmm. Iron win at a canter. COR WIN LOSE OR DRAW WE STILL HAVE A DRINK!
score draw i think. if we can play like we did 2nd half vs watford then we will win. but i think scunthorpe will make it harder for us than watford so a draw it is.
Manager on Saturday's game John Ward is looking for Bristol Rovers to pick up their first win of the season when Scunthorpe visit the Memorial Stadium this weekend. Although the manager knows it is going to be another tough game, he believes that if his side can reproduce some of the quality shown on Tuesday night, they have enough to take all three points. John said: “My aspiration is to win this weekend. We went in to the Watford game trying to win, but I just said how difficult it would be, and that proved correct. “This week we have got to try and win, and that is what the players want and what the supporters want, and I believe we are good enough to win this game “If we can produce some of the quality we showed in the last game and a half we will give ourselves a good chance of doing that. “If we stick together, then we have a chance of getting a good result this week, and that is what is important now.” The manager was pleased with the way his side lined up on Saturday, giving Eliot Richards the chance to play in his preferred striker role. John said: “We switched it around a little bit to get Eliot down the middle, and it certainly looked a more worthwhile and productive way of going about things. It was certainly promising. “Eliot is a goalscorer and that is what he wants, it is more enjoyable and more productive for him down the middle. “But I still think there is more to come from him. He is that guy; if you give him half a chance he is going to put it away, or at least come close.” Scunthorpe will be looking for a return to League One after being relegated this summer. John said: “They performed well at Barnsley, we had a scout there, and we know they are a team that wants to play from the back and play their football, in the same way we try to do. “It will be a tough game, no question about that, they have a good manager who knows the workings of the club. “We are at home, so we have to be positive, there are a lot of things we can take out of the previous two matches and take in to this game.” And the manager has been pleased with the attitude shown by the young players coming in to the side. He said: “The good thing about the kids coming in is that they have shown no fear, all four have shown that they are ready to give it a good go. “They have become more confident since being around the group, but they have now stepped up into a level where an error or a mistake is not accepted. “They have progressed from being successful at youth level to try and be successful at senior level. Their frame of mind is ‘give me a chance’, and when they have been in there they have been alright.”
MANAGER Brian Laws has pieced together a new-look Scunthorpe United side following their relegation to League Two at the end of last season. Only four players that started the final game of the relegation campaign remained when the Iron - who face Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium tomorrow - opened their season against Mansfield Town at Glanford Park. Veteran strikers Deon Burton and Chris Iwelumo are just two of the 11 new faces Laws has added to the squad over the summer break, whilst there have also been returns to the club for defender Andy Dawson and midfielder Matt Sparrow. Laws watched his new-look side secure a comfortable 2-0 victory and was then full of praise for the players again after they held Championship side Barnsley in the Capital One Cup only to lose out on penalty kicks. "I've seen something that we didn't have last year – resilience," Laws said. "As a unit I think have we defended really well. The lads who have come in have got that knowledge and it showed. "I have even heard the players talking about it, which is refreshing because we had such a quiet bunch last year. That tells me we've got the right people in to help us to see games out when we're in a winning position." He added: "The players have shown all the attributes – attitude, application, desire and commitment – you need to put in performances. It has all been there in abundance and clear for everybody to see. "I think there's a steeliness about us, a desire and commitment from the players. They have shown they are prepared to give it their all. "That's what you have to do. That's the mentality we have to create at this football club to be successful."
Happily settle for that point. Good team spirit and the youngsters are gaining experience and confidence.
Poor performance really but the young ones will get valuable experience from this. We will continue to struggle until our squad is fully fit. Parkes injury is depressing
BBC Report Bristol Rovers held on to claim their first point of the season with a goalless draw against Scunthorpe. Sam Winnall and Terry Hawkright saw shots crash off the woodwork in the first half as the visitors searched for a breakthrough. Defender Michael Smith denied Winnall again with a goal-line clearance. Bar a half-chance from David Clarkson, depleted Rovers - without nine-first team players - failed to trouble Iron keeper Sam Slocombe. And their injury woes continued as captain Tom Parkes was stretchered off after being knock unconscious following a tussle with striker Deon Burton. VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM Bristol Rovers manager John Ward told BBC Radio Bristol: "There's mixed feelings, as you want to win your home games, but you don't want to get beaten either. "I said to the team I can't grumble about the attitude or work rate, or the way we've gone about trying to look after the game. "I'm pleased we are off the mark and that's the big thing for everybody. "It's a plus for the supporters who have stayed with us over these three matches." Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws told BBC Radio Humberside: "Hugely disappointing to say the least, is that a positive to take from that? We're hugely disappointed, because the players are. We really dominated the game and that was an opportunity for us to take all three points. "We put ourselves in some great positions but chose either not to shoot or when we did shoot it wasn't on target or when we hit the target it wasn't precisely. "I've said to the players if we're disappointed today then that's not bad, however, our disappointment has to be turned into a positive for next week."
Manager draw. John Ward was pleased to see his side pick up their first point of the season and keep a clean sheet against Scunthorpe this afternoon. And again the manager was impressed with the effort and commitment shown by his side. He said: “It is a slight mixed feeling, because you want to win your home games, but at the same time you don’t want to get beat. “It was a really tight game and Brian Laws will have cause to say he could have won it and I have similar shouts. I cannot grumble about their attitude and work rate, we just have to play a bit better. “I am pleased we are off the mark, that is a plus for the players and the supporters who have stayed with us over these last three matches. “We cannot try any harder in the three games we have had, and that is the bottom line. Whoever goes out there, whether it is a 17 year-old making his debut or a senior pro, they give their all and that is what we have to do. The manager confirmed that Tom Parkes was taken to hospital with concussion after he was knocked unconscious during the game. John said: “Tom has got some concussion and has been taken to hospital for observation, so we have to deal with that. “That means the team had to change and our plans were altered, but we have to cope with that, and we did.” And the manager had words of praise for the youth department coaches. He said: “We have to pay real tribute to our youth coaches who have nurtured and brought these young players through. “They are sticking the shirt on and giving it their best and the supporters appreciate that. “We have a game for the younger lads who haven’t played on Tuesday down at Exeter, as we have to give them their football.”
