This thread is for all the news leading up to the game its not really a match thread as normally I don't bother with them for home games as most on this forum go to watch the game anyway (except me as I will be at work :emoticon-0106-cryin) but it can be used for it if anyone wishes.

So as usual I've added a poll and for any newcomers to the forum I always put the match threads on early so everyone has time to get their vote in for the final score predictions also I like to use the thread as a build up to the game also <ok>

I will keep the thread sticky until after the after the game<ok>

Right then what will the score be against The Mariners on Saturday will we get our Conference debut off with a win or will Grimsby grab all three points, maybe you think it will be a boring 0-0 draw or a high scoring draw, which way will it go.

The last time I saw this fixture we lost heavily. I think this one will be close and I'm going for a score draw.

Was it the 4-0 defeat at The Mem in the 1997/98 season or the 7-0 defeat in the 1957/58 season

I have predicted a home defeat. We really need to a great start but I think Grimsby are a good side in this league and like us shouldnt be down here. They have more experience than us down here and will also want a good start. Disley will want to show we made a mistake in letting him go. Although we will see a good spirited display from the players and much better performance compared to last season, I think we will lose 2-1 live on BT sports and this will leave the fans feeling very angry and the anger being put to box 1. As we have the early kick off, a defeat will put us rock bottom. I cant see the fans being happy with this.

Yeah definitely can't see us winning its rare we win our first game of the season especially at home plus we don't have the best record for televised games.

Previous home games against Grimsby. Anyone remember these?

December 1998 - Bristol Rovers 0-4 Grimsby - I wasn't at this one because I was a bit young, but I've seen highlights. By the look if things Grimsby took us apart on a murky Friday night. The Mariners, who would win the play-offs at the end of the season, took the lead when Tony Gallimore found the net. Steve Livingstone turned the ball home three minutes later to make it two. They added further goals late on through Kevin Donovan's shot into the top corner, and Livingtone's powerful shot from outside the box.

February 2005 - Bristol Rovers 3-0 Grimsby - This was a weird game, as Grimsby had enough chances to win about three games, only for goalkeeper Ryan Clarke to continually deny them in a man of the match performance. Most of that was in the second half after Rovers had already gone 3-0 up in a first half out of keeping with a number of other matches in the Ian Atkins era. James Hunt powerfully headed in the first, Ryan Williams - on as a substitute for the ill Paul Trollope - fired in a magnificent strike from 30 yards for two, and Richard Walker lobbed ex-Rovers loanee Anthony Williams to round things off.

August 2005 - Bristol Rovers 1-2 Grimsby - Junior Agogo put Rovers ahead nine minutes after half time, but Grimsby went on to turn the game around and win it thanks to goals from striker Martin Gritton and giant defender Rob Jones. The result meant that the number of home defeats for the 2005/06 season was the same for the previous campaign - after just one match!

August 2006 - Bristol Rovers 1-0 Grimsby - This was Rovers' first win of their promotion season, and it came in a scrappy affair short on chances at either end. Rovers were the better side though and deserved the victory. Richard Walker saw a shot superbly deflected over the bar by Ben Futcher, but the goal came shortly after when Ryan Green crossed low for Andy Sandell, who turned the ball home past Phillip Barnes. This was also Junior Agogo's last game for Rovers.
